I’ve been hearing some early buzz about Glen Powell’s new movie, How to Make a Killing, and it sounds fantastic! It’s being described as a dark comedy thriller, and I’m already really intrigued.
In the A24 film, Powell stars as Becket Redfellow, a man driven by a desire for revenge. Abandoned by his incredibly wealthy family at birth, Becket was forced to work a manual labor job. Now, he’s determined to improve his life by eliminating the family members who stand between him and the inheritance he believes is rightfully his. The movie also features Margaret Qualley, Jessica Henwick, Ed Harris, Bill Camp, Zach Woods, and Topher Grace.
I’ve been reading the first reviews of ‘How to Make a Killing,’ and they’re really promising! A lot of critics are highlighting the fantastic performances from Powell and Qualley. Rachel Leishman, for example, called it a thrilling and exciting dark comedy – she even said it reminded her of ‘American Psycho,’ which is huge praise! She really loved Powell’s performance as Becket, describing him as charming, twisted, and completely captivating. And she was thrilled with Qualley’s slightly unhinged energy – it sounds like she perfectly embodies Becket’s childhood friend, Julia Steinway. I’m already so excited to see it!
As a huge cinema fan, I have to say I’m really blown away by Powell and Qualley – their connection on screen is just electric! I was completely hooked by the over-the-top kills, and surprisingly, I found myself actually wanting Becket to succeed. Plus, the ending is seriously shocking! Jairo Jiménez really hit the nail on the head calling it a sharp, addictive satire, and Powell delivers one of his best performances ever. He’s brilliantly twisted and captivating, and the chemistry between him and Margaret Qualley is incredible.
Adriano Caporusso describes How to Make a Killing as a generally enjoyable, though somewhat flawed, crime story. He credits Glen Powell’s charisma with making the film more captivating than the script itself suggests. Matt Neglia echoes this, noting the film is fun and well-paced, but that its smoothness prevents it from fully exploring deeper story elements.
John Patton Ford, known for directing the 2022 crime thriller Emily the Criminal starring Aubrey Plaza and the 2010 short film Patrol, wrote and directed How to Make a Killing. The movie, originally called Huntington, will be released in US theaters on February 20th.
Glen Powell’s latest film comes after appearing in the 2025 remake of The Running Man, which received a mixed reception and didn’t perform well in theaters. While How to Make a Killing isn’t a big-budget movie, it gives Powell a chance to build on the success he’s had with films like Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone but You, and Twisters and hopefully achieve both critical acclaim and commercial success again.
How to Make a Killing is not releasing during a particularly competitive debut weekend, but it will have to contend with several high-profile movies during their second week in theaters. Valentine’s Day weekend features the releases of Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi’s Wuthering Heights, Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo’s Crime 101, the animated sports movie Goat, Sam Rockwell’s Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, and Liam Neeson’s Cold Storage.
