Brand New Day’s Villain Should Be The Biggest Spider-Man Nemesis Without A Live-Action Appearance

One of Spider-Man’s most significant villains, who hasn’t yet appeared in a live-action movie, might be revealed as the one causing Peter Parker’s problems in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline. Throughout the Spider-Man films, many of his classic foes have battled him on screen.

Over the course of his movies in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Sony Spider-Man films, Spider-Man has fought a wide range of villains, including the Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Venom, Sandman, the Lizard, Electro, the Vulture, Rhino, Shocker, and Mac Gargan, who will likely become the Scorpion in the upcoming film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Although Morbius, Carnage, Knull, and Kraven the Hunter haven’t fought Spider-Man on screen yet, they’ve all recently appeared in live-action films. With so many Spider-Man villains out there, only a handful of the most well-known ones haven’t made it to the big screen.

The Original Hobgoblin Could Be Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s VIllain

Among Spider-Man’s villains who haven’t appeared in movies, Hobgoblin is arguably the most significant one yet to be portrayed in a live-action film, across any version of the story.

The character Ned Leeds appears in the films as Jacob Batalon, but he’s different from the comic book version. While the comic Ned Leeds was misled into believing he was the Hobgoblin, this Ned has no connection to the original Hobgoblin villain.

With the Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline establishing a fresh start for Spider-Man – where no one knows his secret identity – the Marvel Cinematic Universe can also explore a new direction for Ned Leeds, particularly now that Jacob Batalon is returning to the role.

While Ned Leeds isn’t a villain, the idea of him becoming the Hobgoblin doesn’t quite fit – and interestingly, the original comic book story revealed he wasn’t the Hobgoblin at all! A later story change showed that the true Hobgoblin was actually a rich and dishonest businessman named Roderick Kingsley, who manipulated Ned into thinking he was the one committing the crimes.

Ned Leeds was a sympathetic character who was unfairly blamed for the crimes of the Hobgoblin. He died with a ruined reputation, and both Spider-Man and the public thought he was a villain. The recent Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline could explore this further, perhaps by focusing on gaps in Ned’s memories to reveal a genuine Hobgoblin plot.

Roderick Kingsley, also known as the Hobgoblin, could be the primary villain in a potential Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline, manipulating Ned Leeds without him realizing it. While the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film includes characters like Scorpion and Tombstone, they don’t seem strong enough to be the main antagonist. It’s likely another character is secretly a bigger threat, and the original Hobgoblin is a strong possibility.
