It was a really tough day for me on Tuesday. My sweet dog, Darla, sadly passed away. She was such a special part of my life, and I’m absolutely heartbroken.
The 37-year-old actress shared a touching Instagram post—a collection of photos of her beloved pet who recently passed away—and expressed her deep sadness.
Vanessa Hudgens, the actress from Salinas, California who starred as Gabriella Montez in High School Musical, shared that her dog, Darla, went everywhere with her.
Oh my gosh, everyone who really knows me knew Darla. She was my shadow, seriously! I mean, I went nowhere without her. She was always, always with me – it was just us against the world!
‘Traveled the world. Was there for me every single step of the way.’
Hudgens fondly remembered Darla, describing her as ‘the smartest little dog I’ve ever known’ and saying she ‘couldn’t have asked for a better companion’.
Actress Vanessa Hudgens, who shares two children with her husband Cole Tucker, said she was deeply saddened by the difficult decision to euthanize her dog, Darla, who had been struggling with health issues.
Losing my sweet girl was absolutely heartbreaking, one of the toughest things I’ve ever gone through. Her health had been declining, and I knew it was time to let her go peacefully. I already miss hearing her little paws tap across the floor – the house feels so empty without her.
Hudgens concluded her heartfelt message by asking people to cherish their pets, writing, ‘If you have a furry friend, give them an extra hug for me. Rest peacefully, my sweet girl.’
I absolutely loved seeing all the photos of Darla in that video! There were some really sweet shots of her – like when she was sitting at the table with Vanessa Hudgens, rocking those adorable sunglasses, and all cozy wrapped up in a blanket. It just melted my heart!
Baseball player Tucker, who has played in the farm systems of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Colorado Rockies, and Los Angeles Angels, shared a heartfelt post about his dog who recently passed away on his Instagram Stories.
Tucker posted a photo of Darla with a drink, announcing that a very special person had passed away.
Hudgens also received condolences from her support circle in the wake of the painful passing.
Julianne Hough sent a heartfelt message to Vanessa Hudgens, sharing her love and hoping Hudgens’ dog, Darla, is reunited with her other pets, Lexi and Harley, in a peaceful and beautiful afterlife, watching over everyone.
Hough went on to say that nothing can truly ease your sorrow, but you should find comfort in knowing she’s now watching over your family, sending them love and protection – she loves you, Darla.
Max Clayton expressed his sorrow to Vanessa, fondly remembering her as he thought of someone named Darla.
He went on, ‘She’s so fortunate to have had you with her through everything. I love you dearly.’
Emilynn Rose expressed her condolences to V, saying she was very sorry for the loss of Darla, who was clearly loved by V and their family. She wished Darla peace.
Podcaster Adam Cobb described his dog, Darla, as a tireless fetcher, happily retrieving a ball countless times – as many as he could throw it.
‘The connection that you both shared was unmatched. Sending love, big hug and prayer.’
Lori Butler, the mother of actor Austin Butler, originally rescued Darla the dog.
In August 2018, Vanessa Hudgens explained to Collider how she and her former partner ended up adopting their dog.
Vanessa Hudgens explained that her boyfriend’s mother noticed a small dog on her neighbor’s balcony every day during the summer. She saw it repeatedly, day after day.
Hudgens explained that Darla was in a very difficult situation, without food or water, and had been struggling for hours.
She knocked on their door and offered to care for the dog, since they seemed unable to do so. They agreed and gave her the dog.
Vanessa Hudgens and her then-boyfriend, an Academy Award nominee, got a dog together after Lori, a loved one, sadly passed away from cancer in September 2014.
Hudgens shared that after Darla’s owner passed away, she and Austin adopted her. ‘She’s been such a sweet addition to our family,’ Hudgens said. ‘It’s been amazing to watch her personality blossom. She was so shy at first, she wouldn’t even let us touch her, but now she’s incredibly affectionate and loves to cuddle.’
In the 2018 interview, Hudgens explained what being a dog owner meant to her personally.
Honestly, having a dog has really taught me about responsibility. They’re a lot like having kids – you need to care for them constantly – but thankfully, they can handle being alone for a little while. But beyond that, my dog just… gets me. She sees something good in me, and somehow, that helps me see it in myself too. It’s a really special connection.
