Robert Wagner celebrated his 96th birthday on Tuesday, with his stepdaughter, Natasha Gregson Wagner, sharing personal photos of the occasion.
The 55-year-old shared the heartfelt message about her stepfather shortly after the 44th anniversary of her mother’s death. Her mother, Natalie Wood, and also the late wife of the individual in question, tragically drowned in 1981 at the age of 43.
A quick video posted to her Instagram Stories showed Wagner celebrating his birthday with family and friends, blowing out the candles on his two cakes.
Someone spotted him smiling inside what looked like Cache Cache, a French restaurant in Aspen, Colorado, while Wagner wore a hat.
He sat beside his 19-year-old grandson, Riley, whose mother, Katie Wagner, is his daughter from his marriage to the late Marion Marshall.
The Hart To Hart star accessorized with a colorful silk scarf wrapped around his neck.
Another photo showed him relaxing on the couch, with Natasha sweetly kissing the top of his head.
Photos from the party revealed the pool area was decorated with lights and big displays featuring the actor’s initials, “RJ” – standing for Robert John – and the number 96.
Natasha shared a touching old photo from 1972 of herself as a child at Heathrow Airport in London. In the picture are her stepfather, mother Natalie, half-sister Katie Wagner, and maternal grandmother Maria.
It was so heartwarming to see the outpouring of support for this Hollywood icon! After so many of you sent well wishes, a lovely message was posted on his Instagram to acknowledge it all – a really sweet gesture, honestly.
The message said, “Hi everyone! Thank you for all your wonderful birthday wishes for RJ. He’ll be so happy and touched when he reads them.”
This news follows three months after the anniversary of the death of his wife, Natalie, a famous actress who tragically drowned near Catalina Island, off the coast of Southern California.
Natasha Wood’s daughter, Natasha, was born to her and film producer Richard Gregson. They married in 1969 but separated after just ten months, eventually divorcing in 1972.
Wood and Wagner rekindled their romance and remarried in 1972. They had first tied the knot in 1957, but divorced in 1962. Their daughter, Courtney, is now 51 and was born on March 9, 1974.
Wagner has a daughter, Katie, from his marriage to Marshall, which ended in divorce in 1971 after lasting from 1963.
Robert Wagner launched his successful Hollywood career in the 1950s, appearing in movies like ‘The Happy Years’ and ‘Teresa.’ He gained widespread recognition with the 1956 film ‘A Kiss Before Dying’ and continued to star in popular projects, including ‘Winning’ and the television series ‘The Streets of San Francisco.’
I remember when Robert Wagner really took off – it wasn’t until 1979, when he became Jonathan Hart on ‘Hart to Hart’ alongside Stefanie Powers. That show is what everyone remembers him for, and it finally gave him the huge recognition he deserved!
The show featured a wealthy and attractive married couple who enjoyed solving mysteries. With 111 episodes, it originally aired until 1984, but remains popular today thanks to a dedicated fanbase and frequent re-airings.
Hart To Hart was created by author Sidney Sheldon.
The show followed Jonathan, a self-made millionaire played by Wagner, and Jennifer, a freelance writer played by Powers – a couple without children known as the Harts, who adore their rescue dog, Freeway.
Their sidekick was the streetwise butler Max, played by Lionel Stander.
The show featured appearances by well-known actors and personalities like Ray Milland, Capucine, Eve Arden, baseball legend Tommy Lasorda, Tippi Hedren, Julie Newmar, and Robert Davi.
Later, there were several spin off Hart To Hart movies.
He later found success acting alongside Mike Myers in the 1997 film, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.
Wagner is wed to Jill St John; they tied the knot in 1990 after eight years of courtship.
They had been friends since the 1950s. She was close to the actor and his wife, who tragically drowned in November 1981 while taking their small boat near Catalina Island.
Natalie and her partner had been drinking with Christopher Walken, 82, a fellow actor from her show Brainstorm. Natalie went to bed before the two men.
Her body was discovered the next day.
Although the actor was a suspect in the case, he was never arrested. Despite much speculation, there was no evidence to support claims that he had arranged his wife’s death, even though he starred in ‘Splendor in the Grass’.
Initially, authorities determined her death was an accidental drowning. However, when the case was revisited in 2011, the official cause of death was updated to simply ‘drowning with other unknown contributing factors’.
Robert was officially cleared as a person of interest in 2022.
Natasha has fiercely defended him amid all the speculation.
In her 2020 memoir, More Than Love, Natalie Wood wrote that no one ever doubted her father’s love for her mother, or how heartbroken he was when she died.
‘We can never know with complete certainty how my mother ended up in the water.’
Natasha, who was eleven years old when her mother passed away, has chosen to concentrate on what she believes to be true. She wrote, ‘My father would never intentionally hurt my mother, and he would have done everything to protect her if he’d known she was in danger.’ This has helped her cope with her grief.
‘And I focus on my love for my mother, my dad, my family,’ Natasha stated.
My mother wasn’t someone defined by sadness or misfortune. She lived a full life, dedicated to her passions, family, and everything she loved.
Wagner recently shared a photo from his 1957 wedding to Natalie Wood, the star of West Side Story, along with a heartfelt message about his enduring love for her. He wrote that 66 years ago on December 28th, she went from being his girlfriend to his wife, and wished her a happy anniversary, adding that his feelings for her went ‘more than love’.
