I’m so excited – they’ve finally started filming the sequel to ‘Greyhound’! According to Deadline, Tom Hanks is back in Australia shooting ‘Greyhound 2’, and he’s not alone. Elisabeth Shue is returning, and it’s great to see that young star from ‘Adolescence’ back too. Plus, they’ve added Jack Patten, who I really liked in ‘Robin Hood’, to the cast. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic follow-up!
Released on Apple TV in 2020, the film Greyhound quickly became popular and continues to be a frequent fixture in the platform’s Top 10 movie list. Tom Hanks stars as Captain Krause, a first-time leader tasked with guiding 37 ships across the Atlantic, delivering vital supplies and troops. The journey takes them through dangerous waters where Krause and his crew must fight off German U-boats while protecting their valuable cargo and the soldiers on board.
Given how well the first movie did, a sequel to Greyhound was expected, and in 2022, a follow-up was announced. However, it took another three years to confirm that filming would begin in early 2026. Currently, that timeline appears to be on track, with the sequel continuing the story of Krause and the Greyhound crew as they move from the Normandy beaches to the Pacific Ocean, playing a crucial role in the war effort.
Tom Hanks also wrote the screenplay for Greyhound 2, and Aaron Schneider is directing. While there isn’t a confirmed release date yet, the film is currently planned to come out around 2027.
Will ‘Greyhound 2’ Avoid the Biggest Issue With Its Predecessor?
Though Greyhound performed well as an Apple TV+ exclusive, it wasn’t intentionally released that way. The film came out in July 2020, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, making a traditional cinema release impossible. Tom Hanks expressed his disappointment, calling it “an absolute heartbreak” that the movie couldn’t be seen on the big screen.
Now that the pandemic isn’t a factor, Greyhound 2 is expected to be released in theaters. However, Apple hasn’t yet announced how and when it will be shown. While a film of this scale would benefit from a wide theatrical release, Apple is also likely considering whether to make it exclusive to their streaming service, as that could attract new subscribers and boost viewership.

While a short run in theaters could still help a movie when it later appears on streaming services, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to guess how companies like Apple, Amazon, and Netflix will release their original films. Hopefully, Tom Hanks will get his wish and see his Greyhound story continue in theaters with future installments.
