Chris Evans‘ most intense film yet is now streaming for free and has quickly become the most-watched title.
Chris Evans is famous for playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he also took on a darker, more intense role in the 2013 film Snowpiercer. Directed by Bong Joon Ho, this sci-fi thriller doesn’t hold back from showing violence and dealing with difficult subjects. In the movie, Evans plays Curtis, who leads a rebellion against the wealthy elite on a train that serves as the last refuge for humanity after a failed attempt to reverse climate change.
After 13 years, the movie Snowpiercer is now available to stream on Pluto TV for free and is currently the most popular movie on the platform in the United States. It’s beating out other well-known films like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Titanic, Coraline, and Interstellar.
Beyond being one of Chris Evans’ most action-packed films, this futuristic movie—based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette—has also received excellent reviews. It currently holds a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics especially praising director Bong Joon-ho’s vision and Evans’ surprisingly subtle yet powerful performance.
The bleakness of Snowpiercer comes from the harsh world it portrays: the wealthy enjoy lavish lives at the front of the train, while those in the back struggle to survive on food made of insects. The resulting revolution is incredibly violent, largely because both sides fight with knives and other blades.
Chris Evans appeared in Snowpiercer with a talented cast including Ed Harris, Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, and Song Kang-ho. Before this, Evans had worked with director Bong Joon-ho on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in 2010, and had already gained fame playing Captain America in films like Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and The Avengers (2012).
While Chris Evans’ popularity contributed to Snowpiercer‘s performance in theaters, the film didn’t become a blockbuster. It earned a little over $86 million globally, costing around $40 million to make. A key factor in its moderate success was its limited release in the United States, where it made approximately $4.5 million.
The film is now gaining popularity with American audiences, as Pluto TV is offering it for free with commercials. This comes after the end of the Snowpiercer TV series earlier this year, which ran for four seasons and was based on the story Le Transperceneige with a different cast.
The recent popularity of the dystopian film featuring Pluto is similar to what happened with Evans’ previous movies like Sacrifice, Materialists, and Honey Don’t, though only Materialists performed well in theaters. This success also follows the strong streaming numbers for Snowpiercer and comes before Evans’ upcoming role in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday later this year.
