The BBC series Conversations with Friends, based on Sally Rooney’s first novel, is coming to Netflix this month. It originally aired in the UK in 2022 and is the second of Rooney’s novels to become a TV show, following the hugely popular Normal People – which starred Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones – in 2020.
Sally Rooney’s Conversations with Friends follows the complex relationships between two college students and a married couple. This visually stunning series, a co-production of BBC Three, Hulu, and RTÉ, was primarily filmed in Dublin and brought to the screen by writers Alice Birch, Mark O’Halloran, Meadhbh McHugh, and Susan Soon He Stanton.
The novel received widespread praise, and New York Magazine highlighted Rooney’s ability to make ordinary moments feel incredibly important, calling the book “a novel of delicious frictions.”

The BBC series Conversations with Friends featured a talented cast. Alison Oliver, known for Saltburn, played the main character Frances Flynn, alongside Joe Alwyn (Hamnet) as Nick Conway, Sasha Lane (from Apple TV’s The Crowded Room) as Bobbi Connolly, and Jemima Kirke (Girls) as Melissa Baines.
Currently, the show has a 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have noted similarities between it and the series Normal People.
According to The Post NZ, the TV series Normal People was a fantastic adaptation of the novel, but Conversations with Friends actually surpassed the book. The Herald (Scotland) noted that, similar to Normal People, viewers will either love Conversations with Friends or find it completely unengaging.
IMDb viewers had mixed reactions to the show. Some found it excellent and captivating, while others felt it moved too slowly. One viewer advised that it requires patience, adding that those who enjoy a gradual, unhurried story will likely appreciate it.
The series Conversations with Friends is coming to Netflix on February 22nd. It’s currently available to watch as a complete season on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
