Comedian Katherine Ryan recently had a facelift, explaining she wanted to feel like herself again after being pregnant six times in the past five years.
The comedian, who is 42 years old, recently had a costly and complex medical procedure costing £16,000. It happened only eight weeks after she welcomed her fourth child, Holland, last October.
She’d mentioned possibly getting cosmetic procedures done previously, but she hadn’t shared any specifics until now.
So, I recently had a facelift! I wanted to be totally open with you all, and yes, it was a full facelift. I also did a little fat transfer around my cheekbones to give them a bit more definition, and I had a minor blepharoplasty – basically, a little tweak to my eyelids. I shared all about it on my podcast, ‘Telling Everybody Everything,’ this week because I believe in being honest about these things.
A blepharoplasty involves removing a small amount of skin from the eyelids, and often, fat is added back in to maintain volume. I personally had this done on my upper eyelids, and also had a facelift.
Katherine explained the surgery felt like a significant emotional turning point, especially after experiencing six pregnancies in five years – including three miscarriages, as well as the births of her three children with Bobby.
She explained she felt a strong need to rediscover who she was and regain control of her life, feeling like she’d lost touch with her true self since 2019.
I’m not losing it, and I’m not trying to recapture the past. I just want to regain my pre-pandemic, pre-having-five-kids-in-quick-succession appearance.
I was so thrilled for her when she finally went through with the surgery! She chose Dr. Nick Rhodes at the Coppergate Clinic in York, and honestly, it’s a really top-notch place – a full facelift there starts around £16,000, so you know she was in good hands and getting the best possible care. I’ve been following her journey for a while now, and I’m excited to see the results!
Katherine mentioned he’s a highly respected plastic surgeon and has actually trained many of the surgeons in London who now charge higher fees.
Okay, so I’m totally obsessed with this surgeon, right? I’ve spent hours looking at his before-and-after pictures, and I’ve even met people who actually went to him for their procedures. Honestly, that’s huge for me – knowing real people who’ve had a good experience with someone you’re considering… it just makes all the difference in the world when you’re making a decision like this.
Okay, so Dr. Steven Levine – you know, the Kris Jenner doctor? – totally gets it. He told me that you and your surgeon absolutely HAVE to be on the same page about what looks good. It’s everything! And honestly, I’ve seen what Dr. Nick Rhodes has done for some people I know, and they look amazing. Seriously, beautiful! He just gets it, you know?
The Canadian actress, who has three children – Holland and Fred, ages four and three, plus a sixteen-year-old daughter named Violet from a previous relationship – reported feeling no pain after her surgery, rating it a zero out of ten.
She explained that the surprising thing was how quickly you recover – you’re mostly numb to the pain afterward. She had some bruising and swelling, and is still a little swollen now, but she was able to go back to her normal routine almost immediately.
They gave me paracetamol to take home. I probably could have gotten something stronger if I’d asked, but I didn’t need it. I just took ibuprofen and paracetamol for about three days.
She explained that she quickly recovered and was able to enjoy the Christmas season just weeks after her surgery. She attended Christmas parties, took her children to Lapland, went caroling at the Royal Hall, and even cared for a newborn baby – doing everything she normally would during the holidays.
She explained that it’s vital for her and Bobby’s marriage that they both have equal time enjoying their children, and she believes they should share parenting responsibilities equally.
Despite having children, Bobby has maintained his good looks, while my appearance has fluctuated quite a bit over the years – I’ve gained and lost weight repeatedly.
As a lifestyle expert, I always tell people to really listen to their doctors! This actress shared a story about how Dr. Rhodes convinced her not to get a lip lift, explaining it wouldn’t complement her features, and I think that’s fantastic. She said because she took his advice and chose a really talented surgeon for her facelift, the result looks natural – not overdone. It just goes to show, sometimes the best thing you can do is not have a procedure, and finding a skilled professional is key when you do!
Katherine shared that her oldest daughter, Violet, was initially concerned about the outcome.
Katherine remembered being worried that a procedure would result in a drastically altered appearance. ‘She thought it would look terrible, and I’d come back looking completely unlike myself,’ Katherine said. ‘But I don’t look different at all – just a little more refreshed. And my neck looks fantastic!’
She explained that the surgery created a very defined, slender neck – something she never had, even when she was younger. She also said she’d spent years trying to get that look with other treatments like fillers and lasers, without success.
‘You get to a point where if you really want to pull it back, you just need a facelift,’ she said.
Katherine challenged the common belief that facelifts are just for older women or always look artificial, fondly remembering Joan Rivers and urging people to reconsider these old-fashioned ideas.
Many people think facelifts always look unnatural – either obviously done, or like the person has been stretched too much. But really, a facelift is for anyone who’s noticed their skin losing firmness and wants to address that with surgery.
She dismissed the idea that she should have waited longer to have the procedure, explaining that a ‘facelift’ is specifically designed to lift the face, so she got what she needed.
The comedian has always been honest about having cosmetic procedures, like a breast augmentation when she was in her twenties and regular Botox treatments with Dr. Nina Bal. She hinted in December that she’d had something done, but didn’t say exactly what it was.
She also criticized women who aren’t honest about having cosmetic procedures, explaining that icing your face is crucial after a facelift – or really, any facial surgery.
I was diligently following the skincare trend of icing my face, and it made me chuckle to think about how some celebrities my age suddenly look so flawless, and then casually mention they’ve just been icing their faces too.
I pressed an ice pack to my jaw and realized, ‘Wow, so these women are getting facelifts!’ It made me think of my own recovery from a facelift and all the icing I’d been doing.
