Nicole Richie’s daughter shares first post since revealing new identity and transformation on 18th birthday as she unveils tattoo tribute to her mother

Nicole Richie’s daughter recently posted on Instagram for the first time after publicly sharing her new name and a completely updated look.

The daughter of the TV personality, who is 18 years old, was originally named Harlow Winter Kate. However, she recently updated her social media profiles to use only her middle name, Kate.

Nicole later shared that her oldest child has always been called Kate, so it’s natural she’s now using that name publicly.

Kate recently shared photos showing off her new look – including jet-black hair and a back tattoo – after revealing her plans on her 18th birthday.

She had a faint drawing of angel wings on her back, seemingly inspired by the matching tattoos Nicole has herself.

Nicole and Joel Madden’s daughter was seen in a tight-fitting gold dress decorated with butterflies, echoing the design of her butterfly tattoo.

Kate shared the photos with an angel wing emoji, and her mother responded by leaving a series of red hearts in the comments.

Nicole spoke with her daughter for the first time about her new identity last month, after the teen came out to her on her birthday.

Nicole shared some adorable old photos of her daughter on Instagram with a loving message. Fans noticed something new, though – her daughter is now using her middle name, Kate.

Kate also underwent a striking makeover, swapping her blonde hair for a bold, jet-black shade.

‘Yeah, she goes by her middle name,’ Nicole told People. ‘She has her whole life.’ 

Honestly, I wasn’t surprised by the chatter online when she changed her name. She explained she hadn’t even checked what people were saying, but it totally makes sense – she actually goes by her middle name, and it’s lovely to see her embracing that!

Nicole recently used her Instagram account to celebrate her oldest child’s birthday.

As a mom myself, I absolutely love seeing those ‘then and now’ photos! This celebrity recently shared a beautiful collection of pictures showing her daughter growing up – starting with a sweet snapshot of her holding her newborn, and ending with some recent photos of how much she’s blossomed. It’s just the sweetest way to document those precious years!

The celebrity wrote to her 7.2 million followers, ‘Happy 18 years to you, @katemaddennn!’ She added a red heart and a cake emoji to the message.

Nicole also shared a photo of her daughter on her Story.

The proud mom shared a post celebrating her daughter’s 18th birthday, writing, ‘My favorite person in the world is now 18. Happy birthday @katemaddennn. I love you!’

One fan questioned if it was someone’s birthday and if they had changed their name, while another agreed, wondering if it was Harlow.

People left supportive comments, including a sweet message from Kate’s dad and the lead singer of Good Charlotte, who wrote, ‘That’s my girl ❤️✨.’

Cameron Diaz’s husband, Benji Madden, also posted a heartfelt message, saying, ‘Watching Kate turn 18 is amazing! I love you, Kate! You’re incredible – never forget that!’

Nicole has talked before about the experience of raising her two children, who are now teenagers.

In a 2024 interview with Interview Magazine, she described motherhood as both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

The same year, the TV personality got candid about raising Kate and Sparrow as they became teens. 

I vividly remember being a teenager – it feels like just yesterday! And my kids are aware of everything I used to do,” she told Glamour.

Honestly, even before I met them, I just knew I had to be completely honest about who I am. It sounds weird, but it’s been so freeing! Like, I used to worry about hiding things, but letting them see the real me? It’s the best feeling ever. I’m finally just… myself, and it’s amazing.

As a parent, one of my biggest priorities is always being upfront with my children. I truly believe in fostering a relationship built on honesty and trust, and that means I prefer to share things with them myself rather than them finding out later from someone else. It’s important to me that we can always be open with each other, and I hope they feel comfortable doing the same.

Richie also told Today that her ‘favorite stage’ of parenting so far has been raising teenagers.

The reality star said it’s surprisingly easy to remember being 16, as the memories are still very vivid.

Whenever my daughter shares stories about her friend troubles, I always have a similar experience to recall. I even remember the names of people who caused me problems years ago, which is amusing. It’s surprising how much I still remember, and it feels good to connect with those memories.

In addition to being a mother, Richie is also actively working in the entertainment business.

Oh my gosh, you guys, she’s BACK with Paris! I nearly lost it when I found out she was doing ‘Paris & Nicole: The Encore’ for 2024! It’s a celebration of ‘The Simple Life’ turning 20, and honestly, it’s like a dream come true. Seeing them together again just… everything!

That same year, the actor appeared in a new version of the 1991 movie, Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead.

Richie recently told Interview Magazine that she’s finding her 40s to be the most enjoyable decade of her life.
