Despite being a famous couple, Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky have a surprisingly unromantic engagement story.
Chris, 42, told Nova’s Fitzy, Wippa & Kate on Monday that asking Elsa, 49, to marry him felt more like a simple understanding than a grand romantic gesture.
He confessed they’d discussed marriage casually, even before he proposed. He said it felt like it removed the excitement and anticipation from the actual proposal, admitting, ‘It was just kind of like, ‘Sure, let’s do it,’ which took away from the moment.’
The actor, who used to be on Home and Away, said it felt like they were approaching the situation with a casual, ‘what have I got to lose?’ attitude, and were willing to see where it led, as they joked.
Chris, who has three children with Elsa, jokingly mentioned that she still brings up his simple proposal, saying, ‘I think she’s still thinking about it.’
The actor admitted he felt embarrassed about how he proposed to Elsa, especially since she’d already guessed it was happening. He’d hidden the ring inside a box of chocolates.
‘I had it in my hand, in my pocket, and I thought, I’ve got to do something cool with it. This is about as creative as I got, I put it in a chocolate box,’ he explained.
Chris and Elsa began dating in early 2010 after being introduced by a talent agent.
Their relationship progressed quickly, with the couple marrying in December that same year.
The couple moved from the United States in 2015 and now live in Byron Bay with their three children – India Rose, who is 13, and 11-year-old twins, Sasha and Tristan – in a home worth $50 million.
I was so thrilled to read Chris and Elsa’s interview with PEOPLE earlier this week! They really gave us a peek into their amazing life by the coast, and it felt so special to get a glimpse of their everyday happiness.
We have a large property – a farm with horses – and our children spend their days enjoying outdoor activities like surfing, fishing, and riding motorcycles.
Elsa went on to add that she treasures her family’s connection to the great outdoors.
For my family and me, it’s all about connecting with the outdoors. Honestly, city life is tough for us because we’re so used to living in nature, being surrounded by it every day. That’s just our lifestyle, and it’s what makes us happy.
