People are criticizing Wayne Carey’s ex-fiancée, Kate Neilson, after she complained that Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance wasn’t ‘American’ enough.
Kate, who was once engaged to a former Australian rules football player, shared her thoughts on the singer’s performance – which was entirely in Spanish – in a Facebook conversation on Monday.
‘Officially the worst Super Bowl half-time show ever! #BadBunny,’ she wrote on her page.
Several viewers expressed frustration with the missing subtitles during the broadcast.
Kate, an Australian actress who became a US citizen last April, agreed with the statement, explaining that she thought it was unusual for someone not to include some of their native language.
‘It’s hard to understand what any of the lyrics meant unless you speak Spanish,’ she added.
It should be noted that Lady Gaga performed her portion of the show in English.
A user immediately challenged Kate’s use of the term ‘un-American,’ reminding everyone that Puerto Rico is a US territory and its residents are naturally born US citizens, just like anyone born in any of the 50 states.
They explained that Puerto Rico is a part of the United States, making its people American citizens. They then pointed out to Kate that people born in Puerto Rico actually have a stronger claim to American citizenship than someone who immigrated to the country.
The conversation then turned to whether Bad Bunny’s performance was genuine, and what it meant for American culture and politics.
After being criticized, Kate tried to explain herself, saying she knew American geography but just didn’t like having to perform the task like a routine.
I’m not questioning Puerto Rico’s status as part of America, but I was really disappointed with the performance. The choreography and overall show just didn’t compare to some of the incredible stage shows I’ve seen from other artists over the years.
She emphasized it wasn’t about politics, acknowledging that opinions were divided – some enjoyed it, others didn’t, and that’s okay. She personally loved Lady Gaga’s performance.
Bad Bunny, the popular artist also known as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, took center stage at the Super Bowl LVI halftime show. He was joined by a star-studded lineup including Lady Gaga, Pedro Pascal, Ricky Martin, Jessica Alba, Karol G, and Cardi B. The Seattle Seahawks won the game against the New England Patriots with a final score of 29-13.
Levi’s Stadium in California was completely reimagined for a performance, turning the football field into a vibrant scene featuring a sugarcane plantation, domino games, a Latino wedding celebration, and even utility poles for the performer to climb.
Bad Bunny, who has publicly criticized Trump’s ICE agency, recently showed support for countries across North and South America by holding a football with the message ‘Together, we are America’ written on it.
A message on the big screen then read: ‘The only thing more powerful than hate is love.’
The performance was praised by many as a celebration of Latin and Hispanic culture, but Donald Trump strongly disagreed, calling it disrespectful to the United States.
Honestly, I was shocked by this performer. The content was completely unintelligible, and the dancing was just… inappropriate. As someone who thinks a lot about what kids are exposed to, I’m especially concerned about the impact on young viewers, not just here in the US, but globally. It’s just not something I’d want my kids – or anyone’s kids – watching.
This is illogical, disrespectful to American values, and falls far short of what we expect in terms of achievement, innovation, and quality.
Kate is remembered for her involvement in Wayne’s infamous 2007 glassing incident.
The former couple are pictured outside Melbourne Magistrate’s Court in February 2009
