Godzilla is currently enjoying a huge wave of success. The recent Godzilla x Kong movies have been major box office hits, and Toho’s Godzilla Minus One made history by winning an Academy Award. Beyond animated series, Godzilla is also thriving in live-action television.
The first season of Monarch, released in 2023, proved that Godzilla works well on television. The show focuses on the organizations that deal with giant monsters, and impressively covered several decades in just one season. Because of the unique time flow within Hollow Earth, some actors were able to play their characters across different time periods, creating strong emotional connections and a consistent storyline. Now that Season 2 is coming, viewers are eager to find out what happens next in Monarch.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Made Global Waves with Season 1
Compared to most monster movies, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters stands out. It doesn’t just focus on action; it explores complicated themes and builds a rich backstory for the larger Godzilla universe. The show jumps between two different time periods, revealing the origins of the Monarch organization long before it appeared in the 2014 Godzilla film.
The show works so well because it understands what makes classic monster movies, like those featuring Godzilla, truly resonate with audiences. While Godzilla originally represented human hubris – particularly in its first film from 1954 – that deeper meaning often faded as the series continued in Japan. Monarch brings that human element back to the forefront, telling the story of the monsters through how they impact the people in the show.
Classic monster movies typically center on immediate threats and quick victories. However, the Monarch series takes a different approach, portraying its creatures as integral parts of a larger, ongoing world. While the Godzilla and Kong films often showcase the Hollow Earth – the origin of Godzilla and many other Titans – they usually show it from the Titans’ perspective. Monarch stands out by focusing on how humans experience and understand this world.
One of the show’s biggest strengths is its well-developed characters, with complex storylines that unfold over time. The relationships between families, organizations, and the political landscape are all powerfully influenced by the Titans, and these connections create a strong sense of ongoing narrative thanks to the show’s excellent acting.
Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, and Ren Watanabe play a team of heroes who echo the spirit of the original characters from the 1950s – Wyatt Russell, Anders Holm, and Mari Yamamoto. With Kurt Russell reprising his iconic role as Lee Shaw, and bringing both wisdom and surprising energy, the first season of Monarch was a success.
The characters grapple with inner struggles, much like Takehiro Hira’s character, Hitoshi Randa, and these conflicts reflect the outer chaos caused by the Titans. This highlights that the most important battles happen as much inside the mind as they do in the physical world. The organization, Monarch, is shown as flawed and changing, which makes it feel realistic and avoids the typical “secret agency” trope – it’s presented as a group with a history and genuine development. The first season was highly praised, and the excitement surrounding the next installment is certainly justified.
Monarch Season 2 Will Expand the MonsterVerse for the Small Screen
Despite its imperfections, the human element truly shines in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, adding emotional depth and excitement to the story. Season 2, arriving February 27, 2026, promises to expand on the world of Titans and further develop the characters we’ve come to know. Given King Kong’s appearance in the Season 1 finale, it’s no surprise the new season will be set on the iconic Skull Island.
Besides Kong, the new series will introduce a massive new monster called Titan X. The trailer offers a quick glimpse of this enormous sea creature, which has tentacles similar to a kraken. While it’s probably not the same kraken seen in Season 1, Titan X is already creating a lot of excitement. Based on the trailer, a showdown between King Kong and Titan X seems likely, and fans are hoping for more action-packed scenes than they saw in the previous season.
Season 2 will continue to explore the evolving relationships between Keiko and Lee, siblings Kentaro and Cate, and Cate, Kentaro, and their father, Hitoshi. The season will once again jump between different time periods, and familiar actors will return alongside new additions like Amber Midthunder (known from Prey) and Cliff Curtis (Fear the Walking Dead).
The show will continue with its current weekly release schedule, culminating in a season finale on May 1, 2026. Fans are eager for answers to many lingering questions, and hopefully the series will reveal them as organically as it did in its first season. While too much explanation can sometimes hurt a story’s worldbuilding, Monarch seems to be benefiting the MonsterVerse by offering a welcome break from constant action and spectacle.
