Following the huge popularity of Daredevil, Netflix quickly released another exciting action show, and it continues to be a fan favorite a decade later. Capitalizing on the superhero boom of the mid-2010s, Netflix built its own realistic and compelling world with various Marvel characters, and Jessica Jones quickly became a standout series.
While it wasn’t as popular as Daredevil, Jessica Jones was still a really exciting action series and remains one of the best shows on the platform. It’s easily among the best superhero shows of the last decade, and even though it ended in 2019, its themes still feel very current.
Jessica Jones Is Still One Of The Best Superhero Shows Ever Made
As superhero shows gain popularity, Jessica Jones often gets overlooked, despite being one of the best in the genre. The first season, in particular, was exceptional and stood out from the crowd. It successfully captured the gritty, street-level crime feel of Daredevil, but created its own distinct, dark and atmospheric world.
Jessica Jones is a complex and flawed hero, a departure from the typical Marvel characters of that era. She struggles with alcoholism and the lingering effects of past trauma, and these issues are intensified by the actions of the series’ villain, Kilgrave. Many consider Kilgrave to be Marvel’s most compelling live-action villain, and his menacing presence is felt throughout the show, even after he’s gone.
The second and third seasons of Jessica Jones developed the supporting characters more fully, and even when some became less sympathetic, their changes felt believable. Ultimately, the show delivered a unique take on the superhero genre that remains impressive, and though newer shows are starting to explore similar themes, Jessica Jones was a groundbreaking series that deserves recognition as one of the best.
Why Jessica Jones Was Canceled And Moved From Netflix To Disney+
Although originally a Netflix series, Jessica Jones is now streaming on Disney+. This move happened in 2022 along with other Marvel’s Defenders shows. Disney decided to bring all of its Marvel content, including the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, onto Disney+ after launching its own streaming service, which led to the cancellation of the show on Netflix.
The show’s creators knew in advance that Jessica Jones would be cancelled, which allowed them to wrap up the story with a satisfying finale in season 3. However, many fans believe the show still had a lot to offer, and its cancellation, along with other Marvel shows on Netflix, is still considered a major misstep by Marvel seven years later.
It’s puzzling that Disney+ removed Jessica Jones, especially since some other Sony films like Spider-Man: No Way Home haven’t been added. Disney could have found a way to keep the show available, but there’s some good news: a recent update offers a silver lining.
Kristen Ritter Is Finally Coming Back As Jessica Jones
Kristen Ritter is returning as Jessica Jones after almost seven years, appearing in season two of Daredevil: Born Again. Because the original Daredevil series on Netflix was so popular, Disney decided to make its storylines official parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is now continuing the show with most of the original cast.
As a big fan of Marvel on Netflix, I was thrilled to hear about more potential spin-offs. Bringing Jessica Jones back felt like a total win – her show was hugely popular, second only to Daredevil, and she has so much to offer the larger Marvel story. Born Again season 2 seems like the ideal way to bring her back into the fold naturally, without feeling like it’s just for the sake of it.
Jessica is sure to assist Matt in his fight against Kingpin’s control of New York, likely playing a supportive role similar to Frank Castle’s in the first season. If things go well, she could return in her own show, and Krysten Ritter has already demonstrated she’s capable of leading one, even if it’s not a fourth season of Jessica Jones.
