Dax Shepard recalls near-death experience as a teen when his car ‘rolled 10 times’

Dax Shepard shared a story about a dangerous drive he took with a friend during his senior year of high school. They were traveling from Toledo to Detroit in a Ford Probe, and Shepard said the experience nearly cost him his life.

I remember it being very late, and I had to get up for work extremely early. So I asked, ‘Can you drive? I’m going to try and get some sleep in the back,’ Dax Shepard shared on his podcast this Monday.

‘[He said] “Yeah, I’m totally fine.” He had the cruise control on 85.’

Shepard’s friend was not, in fact, fine and wound up falling asleep behind the wheel.

‘And then I just heard gravel hitting the side of the car. And I immediately looked up and he was completely slumped over,’ the Idiocracy alum remembered.

I tried to regain control of the car, but I quickly realized it was hopeless—we were spinning out of control. I braced myself, and then we flipped and started tumbling down the highway.

Shepard was suddenly very scared they were about to crash into the pine trees along the Michigan highway, thinking it would be a fatal impact.

The Ted Segers Brew co-founder remembered a moment of realizing they were in immediate danger, saying, ‘I truly thought I was about to die.’ Surprisingly, they found the feeling strangely comforting.

I vividly remember being absolutely terrified. I thought, ‘Oh no, the car is spinning out of control! We’re going to flip! This is it, we’re rolling, and we’re heading straight for a tree. I’m going to die!’

Shepard went on to explain that after all the intense mental effort, she suddenly felt calm. She described a feeling similar to what’s induced by DMT, suggesting a release of chemicals that brought her a strange sense of peace and acceptance.

The car then rolled ’10 times’ and ‘ended up upside down.’

The comedian, who is six foot three, said they didn’t actually crash into a tree. Instead, they both climbed out of the windows, and thankfully, both he and his friend were unharmed.

Shepard described his near-death experience as ‘highly memorable,’ and for three days afterward, he wondered if he had actually died. As a result, he still won’t sleep when someone else is driving.

On March 28th, Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell will celebrate their daughter Lincoln turning thirteen. They are also parents to their younger daughter, Delta, who is eleven years old.

Shepard and Kristen Bell, who is 45, both restricted comments on their Instagram pages. This came after Bell canceled a planned appearance on TODAY following criticism of a wedding anniversary post she made on October 17th, which many found insensitive.

Bell shared a message celebrating her twelfth wedding anniversary, recalling a strange statement her husband once made: he jokingly assured her he’d never harm her, pointing out that while many men have committed such acts, he wouldn’t, even though he admitted to feeling tempted.

To make matters worse, October was Domestic Violence Awareness month.
