When a student is found dead in the marsh, Detective Eric Bull (Rafe Spall) begins the investigation. But it quickly becomes clear that he and the woman connected to the case have a complicated past, stemming from a previous missing child – who is also Jackie’s niece.
I just read a review in the Observer about “Under Salt Marsh,” and it sounds amazing! They said the acting is really strong, and the way it’s filmed is gorgeous – they really captured the beauty and sadness of the marshlands. It sounds like a visually stunning and emotionally impactful movie!

I just read a review in The Times, and they described the show as pretty bleak, but in a good way! They said it won’t exactly lift your spirits, but it’s definitely not boring – you’ll be hooked, even if it’s a bit of a downer.
Viewers on IMDb have generally reacted positively. Many have compared the show to Broadchurch, pointing to its seaside location and how the story begins. One viewer described it as a skillfully paced mystery that’s captivating and full of surprises.
Another reviewer gave the show a perfect score, praising it as a stunning achievement in creating mood and showcasing strong acting. They described the writing as deep and engaging, and highlighted the lead actress, Reilly, as ‘phenomenal’ and utterly mesmerizing.
The cast of ‘Under Salt Marsh’ includes acclaimed actors Jonathan Pryce (known for ‘Slow Horses’ and ‘The Crown’), Mark Stanley (‘Adolescence’, ‘Happy Valley’), and Naomi Yang (‘Peaky Blinders’, ‘Nightsleeper’). Claire Oakley wrote and created the drama.

I was reading an interview with Vivienne Reilly over at Digital Spy, and she was saying how amazing Timothy Spall is in his role as Detective Bull. She even pointed out that it’s a really different kind of part for him, which is cool!
She told him she’d never seen him do something like that before, and she was so impressed she wanted to see it again.
Spall explained that he doesn’t actively seek out specific roles. He simply reads a script and quickly determines if the character feels like a good fit for him.
He then mentioned another role people recognize him for: playing Jason in the film Trying. He explained, “I immediately connected with that character. Bull was very different from me – it didn’t feel like a part of myself, and that’s what drew me to it.”
New episodes of Under Salt Marsh are released every week, and the season ends on February 27th, so there’s still a chance to start watching if you haven’t yet.
Under Salt Marsh is airing on Sky and NOW.
