The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has embraced the spirit of comic books more than any other film series, and its large-scale crossover events are a major reason why. These crossovers aren’t limited to the main team-up movies; they also happen within individual character films and even in animated projects like Marvel Zombies.
Marvel Studios has already done a lot of exciting crossovers, but there’s still plenty of potential for more. For example, Marvel published a comic series called Aliens vs. Avengers in 2024. Now that both franchises are owned by Disney, it would be great to see this epic storyline adapted into a show on Disney+.
Aliens vs. Avengers Is a Bold Approach to Crossovers
Over the years, we’ve seen many popular characters from different stories team up. Expect to see even more crossovers between DC and Marvel heroes, like Spider-Man and Superman, or Thor and Shazam! Recent comics, such as Aliens vs. Avengers, have led to some incredibly creative storylines, including titles like Secret Wars and Ultimate Spider-Man.
The idea of the Avengers fighting the Aliens might sound simple – Earth’s heroes versus the deadly Xenomorphs. But the comic book series took a different route. It’s set on a ruined Earth in the future, featuring an older, more worn-down team of Avengers.
This comic book series is directly connected to both Alien: Covenant and the broader Alien universe, enriching the overall storyline. Jonathan Hickman demonstrates a clear appreciation for both the Alien and Avengers franchises in Aliens vs. Avengers, allowing them to merge together in a truly spectacular way.
Aliens vs. Avengers Is Ripe for Animation
While a live-action Aliens vs. Avengers movie would be amazing, an animated version seems more likely. The story includes characters who are significantly older than the current MCU actors. Plus, to make it work, the adaptation would probably need to happen outside of the main MCU timeline or in a completely separate universe, as some important characters haven’t even appeared in the MCU yet.
Marvel Studios has recently shown a greater openness to telling stories that don’t strictly follow its core timeline, as seen with shows like X-Men ’97 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. To work well, Aliens vs. Avengers would also need that same creative freedom.
This story was made into an animated series and became a successful model for how to create Aliens vs. Avengers.
With the recent success of both the Alien: Earth series and the Alien: Romulus movie, now seems like a perfect time for an animated Aliens vs. Avengers project. The Alien universe has a history of team-ups, notably through its connections with the Predator franchise.
Now that the Alien series is popular again, and Marvel Studios is expanding its universe, a combined story on Disney+ could be a great success for both franchises. The original material is also compelling enough to make a fantastic animated series that could become one of Marvel’s best.
