The symbolism behind Margot Robbie’s Wuthering Heights ‘tour-drobe’: Outfits’ secret meanings and Easter eggs after she committed to ‘method dressing’ on the red carpet

She famously recreated a slew of Barbie outfits while promoting her role in the film.

Margot Robbie continues to be known for her amazing fashion choices, showcased through her stunning outfits while promoting her new film, Wuthering Heights.

Recently, celebrities have been taking character promotion to a new level with “method dressing” – creating outfits directly inspired by the roles or films they’re promoting, as seen with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo during their Wicked promotional appearances.

Margot Robbie’s costumes for ‘Wuthering Heights’ weren’t just stylish and fitting for the film’s dark aesthetic – they also hinted at the character she was becoming.

The actress’s stylist, Andrew Mukamal, shared that her outfits aren’t just about fashion – they’re actually inspired by the novel Wuthering Heights and have hidden meanings.

At the movie’s debut last week, Margot looked incredibly glamorous wearing a specially made Schiaparelli dress and Elizabeth Taylor’s famous heart-shaped Taj Mahal necklace.

Andrew didn’t decide to wear the necklace on a whim. He carefully sought out the gem, moved by the poignant lyric, ‘I have not broken your heart – you have broken it; and in breaking it, you have broken mine.’

In the novel, Heathcliff says this well-known line to Cathy, highlighting how their relationship led to both of their downfalls and caused them immense pain.

The stunning gem also has a romantic backstory, as Margot raved about the £5.7 million piece after Cartier loaned it to her.

She said on the red carpet: ‘This is Elizabeth Taylor’s necklace. The actual Elizabeth Taylor.

Because it was the Taj Mahal diamond, it felt very romantic and fitting for the evening.

‘It’s a lot of diamonds tonight, we are bringing the Hollywood glam.’

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’ve always been fascinated by the stories behind beautiful objects, and the Taj Mahal diamond is no exception. Legend has it this stunning gem once belonged to Shah Jahan himself – the Mughal emperor who built the breathtaking Taj Mahal! It’s a romantic thought, isn’t it, to imagine such a magnificent stone adorning the man who created one of the world’s most iconic monuments.

Taylor received the gift from her fifth husband, Richard Burton, who joked that he’d have preferred to buy her the Taj Mahal, but it was simply too expensive to move.

The necklace inspired Margot’s nail art, and Chanel’s Betina Goldstein designed a special manicure for the premiere.

She explained to Vogue that the necklace featured marquise diamonds and round rubies. The nail art was designed to look like jewels had fallen from the necklace and scattered gently across her nails.

I treated creating this application with the same care and precision as a jeweller crafting a delicate piece. I carefully customized every detail, like setting individual stones, to ensure a perfect fit.

The piece features 0.88 karats of diamonds – a round cut and a marquis cut – and 0.21 karats of rubies.

Margot’s gown wasn’t the navy blue seen on the runway; it was custom-made in a vibrant red. This choice was deliberate, as red is an important color representing Cathy’s character in the movie.

Earlier in the day, Margot had modelled another red ensemble for the film’s photocall.

Margot’s outfit was much more daring this time, featuring a fitted, snake-print dress designed by Dilara Findikoglu.

The outfit featured a prominent snake print, inspired by a dramatic scene in Wuthering Heights where Heathcliff compares being embraced by a snake to his feelings for Catherine, admitting he deeply dislikes her.

The outfit also featured a corset, representing the constraints and limitations placed on Cathy in the story, as well as the restrictive nature of the Victorian period.

Margot completed her look with a delicate choker from Jessica McCormack and custom-made snake-print Manolo Blahnik heels.

Margot Robbie continued her streak of wearing red on the carpet this week at the Paris premiere, where she stunned in a custom Chanel gown designed by Matthieu Blazy.

The dress combined the fitted waist and flowing skirt of Victorian fashion with a contemporary, sleeveless top.

The exact shade of red was also carefully curated in order to match the red carpet at Le Grand Rex.

Margot shared with Vogue how honored she was to wear a design by Matthieu for her first Chanel red carpet appearance with him as the designer. She felt it was perfect for the premiere of ‘Wuthering Heights,’ a film she’s very passionate about.

Matthieu noted that she effortlessly makes any outfit her own, expressing her true self through her style. It feels completely natural and authentic to who she is.

It’s wonderful that the organization is backing a cause she cares about so deeply, and it was amazing to see her express that passion with her stunning, Wuthering Heights-themed red carpet outfit.

Margot completed her look with a stunning choker necklace from Lorraine Schwartz, adorned with 85 carats of incredibly rare, champagne-colored diamonds.

She added to the look with a diamond ring comprising 15 carats.

Margot didn’t limit herself to red outfits during the promotional tour. She also wore a white feathered dress by Victoria Beckham, and a striking black feathered corset with trousers.

The idea to use feathers came from a scene in Emily Brontë’s novel where Cathy experiences a fever and a mental breakdown.

Oh my god, she was just losing it. Completely unravelling! She was thrashing around, getting more and more frantic, like she was slipping into total insanity. And the pillow… she actually tore it apart with her teeth! It was horrifying, but I couldn’t look away. It was… breathtakingly intense.

She seemed amused by playfully plucking the feathers from the tears she’d made in the fabric and arranging them neatly on the sheet, sorting them by type.

For the UK premiere, Margot really went all out with her outfit, wearing a Dilara Findikoglu gown that took inspiration from a traditional mourning bracelet once owned by Charlotte Brontë, and she even wore a copy of the bracelet itself.

The bracelet, believed to be crafted from the hair of Charlotte Brontë’s sisters, Emily and Anne, over 175 years ago, is too fragile and important to wear. It’s currently exhibited at the Brontë Parsonage Museum.

As a huge fan, I was so thrilled when Wyedean made this incredible, museum-quality replica! It really brings the story and meaning behind the original to life – it’s like it’s stepped right onto the red carpet!

Margot wore a sheer dress by Dilara Findikoglu, adorned with blonde hair that complemented her own.

She finished off the look with archival Boucheron brooches from the early 20th century.

Other outfits she wore during interviews, like a lace Alexander McQueen dress on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a corset during promotional events in London, drew more generally from the dark, romantic style of the novel Wuthering Heights.

As a style expert, I’m not at all surprised Margot Robbie’s outfits for the Wuthering Heights press are so incredibly chic! It makes perfect sense – she clearly has amazing taste, and her stylist, Andrew, also created all the stunning looks for the Barbie promotion, so he knows how to make a statement.

Andrew and Margot have worked together for years. In an interview with Hello! magazine, Andrew described Margot as a wonderful person, ‘a dream and just lovely through and through’.

When I shared some of the detailed concepts with Margot for the Barbie tour, she got really excited – you could just see it. That’s when I knew we were on the right track, and it confirmed that we should definitely pursue that creative direction.

Stylist Lisa Talbot believes the collaboration inspired by Wuthering Heights is Margot Robbie’s most sophisticated look yet, telling the Daily Mail that she looks ‘the best we’ve seen yet’.

She shared: ‘The transformation feels very intentional.

Rather than simply trying to look glamorous, Margot Robbie’s recent outfits seem designed to tell a story, reflecting the setting and feelings of the movie she’s promoting.

With this, she’s become more of a fashion icon while also showing everyone that truly good style comes from personality and understanding the moment.

Margot Robbie’s fashion choices during the movie’s promotional events have really stood out. Whether she’s responding to what fans want or just exploring a new style, it’s clear her looks are bolder, better suited to the film, and arguably her best yet.

Lisa explained that Margot has always been a captivating figure in Hollywood fashion, known for her bold, unique style and confident embrace of femininity.

During her recent interviews for ‘Wuthering Heights,’ it became clear she’d paid attention to what people wanted and adjusted her style. This new look feels both intentional and perfectly suited to the movie she’s representing.

Lisa explained that early in her career, Margot’s red-carpet style, especially during the promotion of Barbie, featured very feminine and striking outfits. These looks were glamorous, confident, and very current.

The previous period showcased iconic, bright pink outfits and uniquely shaped clothing that everyone was talking about. However, like any artist, Margot is constantly developing her style, and her current fashion choices represent a fresh, new direction.

Her style often uses interesting contrasts – revealing and concealing, striking yet elegant – mirroring the movie’s exploration of love, control, and intense emotion. For example, her custom Schiaparelli outfit at the ‘Wuthering Heights’ premiere perfectly demonstrated this.

I’m really loving what she’s doing! So many of us fans are connecting with her style because it feels like a beautiful throwback to classic glamour, but with a really modern and confident twist. It’s not just about the clothes, it’s about the personality she brings to it, and it’s just so refreshing to see.

Even with daring choices like see-through fabrics or bold corsets, she confidently wears the clothes, instead of letting the clothes wear her.

The fashion expert praised Andrew’s ability to create outfits that are both thoughtful and beautiful. He skillfully combines elements like Victorian-era lace, luxurious fabrics, and striking feathers to produce looks that are romantic yet contemporary.
