Channing Tatum is known for blending comedy and action in his films, like in movies such as 21 Jump Street, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. But sometimes he goes all-in on action, and while these movies aren’t always critically acclaimed, they’re definitely exciting. Now, one of his most action-packed films, White House Down—which is heavily inspired by Die Hard—is available to stream for free.
You can now watch White House Down for free on Tubi. It’s interesting to note that this isn’t the first time a film has featured a white actor as a heroic figure saving an African American president from terrorists, in a plot similar to Die Hard. In fact, it only happened twice! 2013 was a particularly notable year for this type of action movie, with both White House Down, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, and Olympus Has Fallen with Gerard Butler, hitting theaters. White House Down was directed by Roland Emmerich, known for Independence Day.
Similar to Olympus Has Fallen, White House Down clearly takes inspiration from the action film Die Hard – swapping Bonnie Bedelia for Jamie Foxx in the story. Channing Tatum plays John Cale, a police officer who recently didn’t get a Secret Service job. When he brings his daughter to tour the White House, a terrorist attack happens, unexpectedly giving him another chance to work for the President. The movie is over-the-top, completely unrealistic… and it doesn’t try to hide that. White House Down is ideal for a relaxed, easy-going movie night.
‘White House Down’ Completely Divided Critics
Both White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen received mixed reviews from critics, with similar scores on Rotten Tomatoes (49% for Olympus Has Fallen and 52% for White House Down). However, audiences generally enjoyed both films, giving them higher ratings – 62% for White House Down and 66% for Olympus Has Fallen.
The movie White House Down wasn’t aiming to be a groundbreaking masterpiece, and it certainly didn’t win any major awards. However, audiences enjoyed it, as reflected in reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. One viewer gave it five stars, saying it was long but packed with action and kept them engaged. Another review was more realistic, praising the action and the lead actors, but acknowledging that the movie didn’t offer much beyond that.
‘White House Down’ Is Channing Tatum’s Most Fun Action Movie

Columbia Pictures
Leaving aside the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine – which leans more towards superhero territory – White House Down is arguably Channing Tatum’s most purely entertaining action movie. He’s been in films like Jupiter Ascending, G.I. Joe, and The Eagle, but White House Down stands out because it doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. It’s not groundbreaking cinema, but it’s a thoroughly enjoyable ride.
