Singer and composer Matti Caspi dead at 76 after cancer battle as his family pay tribute to a ‘beloved husband and a dear father’

Singer Matti Caspi has died at the age of 76 after a battle with cancer.

The composer, producer and singer passed away overnight at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv in Israel.

Matti’s family shared news of his death on Sunday, describing him as a loving husband and father in a heartfelt statement.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our cherished husband and father.

We’ve lost a bright light in our lives. His loving spirit and incredible creativity will always be with us. He was, and will always be, everything to us.

Matti was well-known for several works, including “Brit Olam” (Eternal Covenant), “Ekh Ze SheKochav” (How Is It That a Star), “Hine Hine” (Here Here), “Lo Yadati SheTelchi Mimeni” (I Didn’t Know You Would Leave Me), and “Shir HaYonah” (The Song of the Dove).

The composer had previously pleaded for support from his fans to fun his cancer treatment.

In May, after learning his cancer had spread, he announced the cancellation of his planned shows and launched a crowdfunding effort to raise $1.5 million for innovative, unproven treatments.

He stated then that while doctors were working to keep him alive, he was committed to fighting and achieving a full recovery.

Okay, so I’ve been following this whole situation, and it just kills me to see how hard it is for people to get the help they need. It’s bad enough admitting you’re struggling, but then to have to worry about the money on top of everything? It’s awful! I mean, sometimes people have to go all the way abroad for treatments that aren’t even available here, and the costs are insane! It’s just… it’s so frustrating to watch, knowing how much good a little funding could do. I just want everyone to get the care they deserve without having to jump through all these hoops!

I’ve opted for treatments not covered by standard health insurance. Without additional income beyond my savings and any payments I receive, I wouldn’t be able to afford everything I need.

In July, he announced his illness was stopping him from playing music, but vowed to fight it with everything he had and remain determined. He shared this message while making a short appearance at a concert held in his honor.

Even though Matti was sick and unable to perform towards the end of his life, he kept his fans updated through social media.

He announced the release of a new songbook in November, sharing that even during tough times, something small can bring joy and improve your mood.

I’m excited to share the first in a new series of song notebooks. Each notebook includes space for two albums worth of songs.

This is the first book in a series, and it includes the sheet music for songs from my first two albums. I’m thrilled that anyone who loves my music can now learn to play it, no matter where they are. I’m working to improve my skills and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Born in Israel in 1949, Avi Caspi spent six decades creating music, releasing approximately 1,000 songs and many albums. He also contributed his talents as a musician and producer to other artists’ projects.

During the Yom Kippur War, Caspi visited Israeli army bases with the famous Canadian Jewish singer Leonard Cohen. Cohen later helped arrange Caspi’s song, “Lover Lover Lover.”

Following the passing of Arik Caspi, Israel’s Minister of Culture and Sports, Miki Zoha, described his music as the defining sound of love and hope for Israelis across many generations.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mati Caspi, a hugely influential singer and songwriter. His music profoundly touched many and created lasting classics that are cornerstones of Israeli music.

Songs like “Brit Olam” and “Ma Zot Ahava” have been with Israelis through all of life’s joys and sorrows, providing a comforting backdrop of love and hope. His music will be remembered and cherished for generations to come. May he be remembered with kindness.
