RecipeTin Eats founder Nagi Maehashi steps back from her business as she shares devasting personal news: ‘My heart is shattered’

Nagi Maehashi has announced the death of her beloved dog, Dozer.

The creator of RecipeTin Eats shared some disappointing news in an Instagram post on Sunday.

“He’s gone. I’m heartbroken,” the 47-year-old shared in a post with pictures of her dog.

She then stated Dozer Maehashi’s dates of birth and death: April 26, 2012, to February 5, 2026.

The heartbreaking post was met with an outpouring of condolences and support.

Food blogger Sneh Roy expressed her condolences to Nagi, writing, “I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope he rests in peace, and that you find strength during this difficult time. Sending you love and support.”

Chef Nick Makrides expressed his condolences to Nagi, saying he was deeply saddened by the loss. He described how difficult it is to be in a place that reminds him of the person who is gone.

Allow yourself to feel your sadness and grieve for as long as you need. With time, it’s hoped you’ll be able to remember him with more joy than pain.

News of his passing has saddened many across Australia. Blogger Annie Nguyen expressed her condolences to Nagi, saying he will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Chef Danielle Alvarez expressed her deep sorrow over the loss of Dozer, writing, ‘Nagi, I’m so incredibly sorry. Dozer will always be remembered.’

The news followed a recent post from the food writer and cook, who had shared that their dog, Dozer, was seriously ill after spending several weeks in the intensive care unit.

In a recent blog post, Maehashi shared that Dozer, a beloved member of the RecipeTin Eats team, was hospitalized with a serious double lung infection.

‘I’ve cried a thousand tears and there’s a million more to come,’ she wrote.

Dozer, a 14-year-old with some existing health issues, was hospitalized at SASH with pneumonia.

While the initial outlook was grim, Maehashi said he had showed remarkable resilience.

Things quickly took a turn for the worse, becoming incredibly stressful. Dozer was initially sent home, but had to be readmitted to the intensive care unit just two hours later due to new health problems.

He was discharged again – then returned to intensive care just 10 hours later.

The update marked a painful acknowledgement of what lay ahead.

‘We’re in the final chapter of Life of Dozer and we all know how the story will end,’ she wrote.

Maehashi has always focused on the simple pleasures of food and the kindness it brings. Now, all he wants is time – a fundamental human need.

Just before saying goodbye, she shared her biggest hope: that Dozer would return home well enough to do all the things he enjoys.

As a result, Maehashi announced she is taking time away from work.

While she’s away, her partner, Jean-Baptiste Alexandre, and her brother, Goh, will manage both RecipeTin Eats and RecipeTin Meals, the food bank she started to support those facing hunger.
