I’m so excited! That new spy thriller, Betrayal, which is set in Manchester, is finally on TV tonight! ITV is saying it’s really gripping and compelling, and I can’t wait to check it out. The first episode is on at 9pm on ITV1, and then the second one’s on tomorrow at the same time.
The series centers on John Hughes, an M15 officer portrayed by Shaun Evans (known for his role in Endeavour), who is throwing himself into his work as his personal life and marriage fall apart.
The story begins when he connects with an informant who has information that could dismantle a large criminal organization. However, the informant is killed, and he must track down the assassin to save his own life.

After that, a secret plot begins to emerge, and he starts to suspect he’s been double-crossed. If so, how powerful are the people involved in the wrongdoing?
Evans has been promoting this film as a fresh take on the spy thriller genre, explaining that it centers around a character experiencing a midlife crisis. The story follows John as he struggles with personal issues and seeks a path to move forward.
He’s experiencing difficulties in his personal relationship and is losing respect at work for being unconventional. His health is declining, and his influence is diminishing.
When you place that within the context of international spying, it creates a compelling story with two layers.
I’m so excited about the cast for this show! It’s got Romola Garai, who I loved in Suffragette, and Nikki Amuka-Bird from I, Jack Wright. Plus, Zahra Ahmadi, who I recognize from EastEnders, and Gamba Cole who was great in The Outlaws. Omid Djalili (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again) is in it too, along with Matthew Tennyson (Grantchester), Hayley Tamaddon (Unforgotten), Anthony Flanagan (House of the Dragon), Paddy Rowan (G’wed) and Waj Ali (Out There) – seriously, what a lineup!
Julian Jarrold, who directed A Very Royal Scandal, helmed this project, and David Eldridge, the writer behind The Scandalous Lady W, penned the screenplay.
Betrayal airs tonight at 9pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
