Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s box office hot streak is cooling down significantly.
The third Avatar movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash, came out on December 19, 2025, and had the second-highest opening weekend of any film in the series. However, it only stayed at the top of the box office for five weeks before being overtaken by Chris Pratt’s Mercy. This was less than the previous Avatar films, which each stayed at No. 1 for seven weeks.
Okay, so I was checking the box office numbers, and it looks like Avatar: Fire and Ash is still hanging in there! It’s expected to make around $3.2 million this weekend, which should put it at number 8 in the domestic top ten. It was doing a little better a few weeks ago – Mercy actually helped it hit number 2! But then new movies like Send Help, Iron Lung, and even Melania came out and bumped it down to number 5. Still, pretty impressive for its eighth weekend in theaters, if you ask me!
This weekend saw several new releases—including Solo Mio, Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience, Dracula, and The Strangers: Chapter 3—outperform Melania and Fire and Ash. As a result, Melania fell out of the Top 5.
This is the fastest any movie in the Avatar series has fallen out of the top five at the box office. The first film, released in 2009, stayed in the top five for 12 weeks, and The Way of Water (2022) remained there for 11 weeks. Here’s a look at how all the Avatar movies have performed on the charts during their first 13 weeks in theaters:
| Wk 1 | Wk 2 | Wk 3 | Wk 4 | Wk 5 | Wk 6 | Wk 7 | Wk 8 | Wk 9 | Wk 10 | Wk 11 | Wk 12 | Wk 13 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avatar | #1 | #1 | #1 | #1 | #1 | #1 | #1 | #2 | #4 | #3 | #4 | #5 | #7 |
| Avatar: The Way of Water | #1 | #1 | #1 | #1 | #1 | #1 | #1 | #3 | #2 | #2 | #4 | #6 | #8 |
| Avatar: Fire and Ash | #1 | #1 | #1 | #1 | #1 | #2 | #5 | #8 | TBD | TBD | TBD | TBD | TBD |
Although a few of the recently released films might eventually earn more than Avatar: Fire and Ash, it’s doubtful the movie will return to the Top 5 before it finishes playing in theaters.
Horror films and concert movies often see a big drop in ticket sales their second weekend. However, movies like Send Help, Iron Lung, Solo Mio, and even Zootopia 2 (which has been out for over ten weeks) are still performing better than Avatar 3.
During its ninth weekend in theaters, Fire and Ash will be joined by new releases like Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights and Gore Verbinski’s Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die. Over the coming weeks, films such as A24’s How to Make a Killing, Scream 7, and Pixar’s Hoppers will also be released, likely pushing Avatar out of the top five highest-grossing films.
Despite recent performance, Avatar: Fire and Ash isn’t a failure. Although the movie isn’t expected to reach the $2 billion earned by previous films, it has still made over $1.4 billion globally, placing it among the top 18 highest-grossing movies ever.
