One Unexpected MCU Disney+ Series Is “Obligatory” For Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars

When it debuted in 2021, Marvel Studios’ WandaVision used a unique sitcom style to tell a story about grief and a powerful, reality-bending magic. The Disney+ series featured Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany as Vision, and it greatly expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe by introducing new ideas and characters. The show especially focused on Wanda’s struggles after Vision’s death in Avengers: Infinity War.

According to industry insider AlexFromCC on X, watching WandaVision will likely be essential to understand the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films. This is unexpected because none of the characters from WandaVision are currently listed in the cast for either movie. Robert Downey Jr. is set to play Doctor Doom in both films, with Doomsday scheduled for release on December 18th, and Secret Wars following on December 17, 2027.

The Russo brothers, who directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, are back to direct these films. Stephen McFeely wrote the script for Doomsday, continuing his work with the Marvel Cinematic Universe after previously co-writing the last two Avengers movies with Christopher Markus.

Why Wandavision Could Be Essential Viewing Before Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars

Details from the WandaVision series will likely be important for understanding the next Avengers movies. The show first explored the idea of the Multiverse, demonstrating how Wanda’s sadness led her to create a separate, self-contained reality in Westview, New Jersey. This power to alter reality then developed further in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where Wanda became the Scarlet Witch and learned to travel between different universes with the help of the Darkhold.

In WandaVision, a new version of Vision, called White Vision, appeared. This Vision was rebuilt without his original memories or feelings. By the end of the series, White Vision recovered those memories and then disappeared, leaving his destination a mystery.

The show set up several characters for potential future storylines. For example, Kathryn Hahn’s character, Agatha Harkness, got her own series, Agatha All Along, which premiered in 2024. Teyonah Parris, who played Monica Rambeau, developed superpowers while appearing in WandaVision and went on to appear in The Marvels.

Billy Maximoff, one of Wanda’s twin sons created through magic, was reborn as Billy Kaplan, as shown in the series Agatha All Along. Now known as Wiccan, he has powers similar to his mother, allowing him to alter reality. His brother, Tommy, disappeared for a time but was later reborn as Tommy Shepherd.

The show concluded with Wanda isolated in a cabin, poring over the Darkhold and hearing what sounded like her children needing her. This story continued in the movie Multiverse of Madness, where she tried to find other versions of Billy and Tommy. The movie seemed to end with her death when a mountain collapsed on top of her.

Even though Wanda Maximoff seemingly died in Multiverse of Madness, she could still reappear in future Avengers movies. Marvel Studios never actually showed her body, which suggests a return is possible. Given the Scarlet Witch’s ability to manipulate reality, coming back to life or having survived is definitely within the rules of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The story of White Vision hasn’t been fully resolved. After remembering who he was at the end of WandaVision, he disappeared. His return could be important for future Avengers movies. An upcoming Disney+ series called VisionQuest, starring Paul Bettany, will focus on what happened to White Vision after those events.

Billy Maximoff, also known as Wiccan, offers another important link in the unfolding story. His abilities and connection to the Multiverse might be crucial when facing Doctor Doom. We’re seeing the Young Avengers come together in different Marvel projects, and the Secret Wars storyline could be where they truly emerge as a team.

The reality-bending powers shown in WandaVision could give us clues about how Doctor Doom will function in future movies. Like Wanda, Doom is incredibly powerful and known for altering reality in the comics. Knowing this connection will help viewers understand just how dangerous he is.

Agatha Harkness might play a role in future events. The events of “Agatha All Along” hinted at more stories involving her, and because she’s so knowledgeable about magic and the Multiverse, she could end up helping or hindering the heroes.
