Beverley Callard, 68, reveals she has been diagnosed with breast cancer just weeks after Coronation Street legend lands new soap role in Ireland

Beverley Callard recently shared that she’s been diagnosed with breast cancer, shortly after announcing a new role in a soap opera.

The 68-year-old actress, known for her role on Coronation Street, has moved to Ireland to join the cast of the Dublin-based soap opera, Fair City.

Beverley shared that she found out she had the illness only 20 minutes before she was scheduled to begin filming her first scenes.

In an interview with Patrick Kielty on RTÉ’s The Late Late Show, she shared that she’ll require surgery and radiation treatment in the UK, but doctors detected the cancer at an early stage.

Beverley explained that she’d recently had some medical tests before arriving in Ireland. Just fifteen or twenty minutes before filming her first scene on Fair City, she was in her dressing room, feeling anxious and hoping she seemed okay to everyone.

Honestly, when my consultant called and told me I had to get back to the UK, I nearly dropped the phone! I tried to explain, I really did, that it was impossible. I’d just started this amazing new job and I was already a month into being away – there was no way I could just up and leave!

She continued: ‘I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

I’m doing okay, really. I was a little shaken up at first, but I’m recovering. It’s still early days, and I’m one of many women going through something similar.

It’s still very early in the process. I’m returning to the UK tomorrow for about two weeks. They plan to run tests on my lymph nodes and glands.

I require surgery and radiation treatment, but I plan to return to Fair City soon – hopefully within a few weeks.

Beverley recently addressed gossip about using weight-loss injections after people noticed she’d lost weight.

In a video message to her fans about losing weight, she explained that she’s always been dedicated to fitness and has worked incredibly hard her entire life.

Beverley stated that her impressive body is the result of dedication and effort, not weight loss injections.

She explained that she wouldn’t criticize anyone for getting vaccinated and encouraged people to make the best choice for their own situation.

Beverley is reportedly in financial trouble again, facing a £98,000 tax bill that could lead to her declaring bankruptcy for the second time.

The Liz McDonald actress owed HMRC after her company JMBJ Limited went bust in 2023.

Beverley and her husband, Jon McEwan, both company directors, created the business after she left her role on the ITV soap opera as a means of handling her finances. The company has since gone into liquidation.

The company has only repaid £7,500 of its £114,000 business loans. This leaves them with an unpaid tax bill of £51,000 and a further £47,000 still owed in corporation tax.

The business is also facing around £3,000 in debt to various creditors because of a lack of funds. Furthermore, the liquidators have only received £7,657 out of their total bill of £33,164.

As a lifestyle expert, I often see situations where it’s best to know when to move on, and this was one of those times. After carefully reviewing the finances, it became clear that we weren’t going to get any more money back, and continuing to fight for it would actually cost more than we’d gain. Ultimately, accepting the offer was the smartest move for everyone involved, especially the company’s creditors, as it avoided further expenses and maximized what little was still available.
