As a lifelong movie fan, I’m really excited to hear they’re expanding the world of Twilight with a new TV show! And honestly, I think a series format could be a huge improvement over the films. Fantasy has always been a powerhouse at the box office, but it’s also seen its share of divisive franchises – and Twilight definitely falls into that category. It wasn’t a critical darling, but it brought a unique take on vampires to a massive audience, and I’m curious to see how that translates to television.
The Twilight Saga, based on Stephenie Meyer’s books, tells the story of the intense and often challenging relationship between human teenager Bella Swan (played by Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). The series follows their love story from the beginning and explores their journey as they build a family—a family that sparked a lot of debate. While critics weren’t impressed, Twilight was a huge success at the box office.
Despite no current plans for new movies or a remake, the world of The Twilight Saga isn’t going anywhere. It will continue to grow with Midnight Sun, an animated series coming to Netflix, and other potential expansions.

The original Twilight series consists of four books: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. Author Stephenie Meyer later added to this world with the novella The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner and Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined, which retells the story of Twilight with the genders of the main characters reversed.
After a delay caused by leaked materials, Stephenie Meyer released Midnight Sun in 2020. This book continues the story of Bella and Edward, but it retells the events of Twilight from Edward’s point of view. Midnight Sun offers readers a look into Edward’s thoughts and actions, such as what he did while Bella was asleep and his initial impressions of her.
While a live-action adaptation with the original actors isn’t possible now, the novel Midnight Sun is becoming an animated series on Netflix. Essentially a retelling of Twilight from a different point of view, the animation format will allow for a more faithful adaptation of the book’s fantastical parts.
Fantasy Has Changed A Lot Since Twilight
I remember when Twilight came out, it totally brought vampires back into the spotlight! They were always around, but things had slowed down a bit before then. What was really different was the kind of vampires Twilight showed us. They weren’t the classic, scary monsters—these vampires sparkled, were incredibly strong, and were surprisingly sensitive. It really resonated with a lot of people, especially its core fans, but honestly, it also turned some older vampire fans away because it was such a big change.
For years, the Twilight series has been the subject of jokes, but recently, people have been revisiting it with a more playful attitude. The fantasy genre has evolved since Twilight first came out, and audiences are now more accepting of unique takes on familiar creatures. Plus, with so many streaming options available, there’s simply a lot of content competing for our attention.
The way we watch movies and TV shows has changed thanks to streaming, and that means stories like Twilight probably wouldn’t face the same intense criticism today. While Twilight received a lot of negative attention, new stories like Midnight Sun and others in that universe are likely to avoid that level of scrutiny now that streaming is so popular.
Midnight Sun Can Bring The Twilight Franchise Back
While The Twilight Saga is already complete, a movie based on Midnight Sun might be just what the series needs to regain popularity. There’s a greater acceptance of stories like Twilight now, and after so long, fans know exactly what to anticipate from that world.
Although the story of Midnight Sun is already familiar, seeing events unfold from Edward’s point of view offers a fresh perspective and deeper insight into his character and his connection with Bella. The animated format is also likely to draw in new viewers curious to experience the world of Twilight in a new way.
As of today, Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for Midnight Sun, and it’s still being developed. There’s no immediate pressure to release it, though, because Twilight remains popular, giving Netflix the time to ensure the show is high quality.
