Fans recently got to see a fantastic piece of artwork from the golden age of the original manga.
A recent update to the Toriyama Archives – a section on the official Dragon Ball website that shares older artwork by Akira Toriyama, including pieces rarely seen before – revealed a special calendar created for the 12th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump in 1993. The calendar features Goku, Bulma, and Gohan enjoying a scenic stop along a road.
The artwork, available below, depicts Goku, Gohan, and Bulma riding down a peaceful road, creating a scene reminiscent of a classic road movie. Notably, the scooter they’re riding features the same symbol for ‘longevity’ seen on Gyumao’s flying car.
Dragon Ball Proves Its ‘Longevity’ With Latest Akira Toriyama Archive Reveal
I remember the calendar had more than just the artwork on the front – the back of it showed a preview for the spring 1993 Toei Anime Fair. It was the second time Toei Animation had put together a fair featuring only movies based on Akira Toriyama’s work, and they called it “Akira Toriyama: The World 2.” It was a huge hit, and everyone was excited about it.
The Toei Animation Fair preview included the premiere of Dragon Ball Z: Broly — The Legendary Super Saiyan on March 6, 1993. This movie introduced Broly, a powerful warrior and the son of Paragus, who is known as the Legendary Super Saiyan. He almost defeated Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Trunks all by himself.
Though it wasn’t a huge success when it first came out, Dragon Ball Z: Broly — The Legendary Super Saiyan ultimately earned over $21.7 million worldwide on a budget of about $15 million (2.43 billion yen). Despite this modest financial performance, the film received very positive reviews and currently has a 7.4/10 rating on IMDb, based on over 13,000 reviews.
Both Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan and Dr. Slump and Arale-chan: N-cha! Clear Skies Over Penguin Village were first shown together at the 1993 Toei Animation Fair. Broly was well-received upon release and currently has a 7.2/10 rating on IMDb.
While fans of Dragon Ball and Akira Toriyama enjoy celebrating the series’ history, the recent Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri event also revealed exciting future plans. This includes a new project adapting the “Galactic Patrol” arc from the manga, even with the current legal issues surrounding the anime and other franchise rights.
