Nicki Minaj slammed for hypocrisy over old post admitting she was an ‘illegal immigrant’ after backing Trump

Nicki Minaj is receiving criticism again because old social media posts have reappeared, revealing she once stated she entered the United States illegally when she was a child.

People are now criticizing her for suddenly supporting President Trump’s policies, especially considering those policies have led to families being separated and widespread deportations.

The controversy started after Nicki Minaj joined conservative commentator Erika Kirk at a Turning Point USA event last month.

Right away, people online started sharing a post from Nicki Minaj’s Instagram from 2018. In it, she talked about her own family’s immigration experience and criticized the practice of separating families at the border between the U.S. and Mexico.

People reacted by saying she seemed disconnected from her difficult past, and that she’s changed a lot since then.

Nicki Minaj shared a personal story, recalling her experience arriving in the US as a five-year-old immigrant. She expressed deep concern and empathy for children facing separation from their parents, imagining the fear and panic they must be experiencing. She pleaded for the practice to stop, highlighting the trauma it could inflict.

The post, showing children sleeping on mats inside a Homeland Security detention center, was shared as people expressed strong disapproval of the practice of separating migrant children from their families.

It really hurts me to see some fans calling Nicki a ‘sellout.’ As someone who’s followed her career from the beginning, I know how proud she is of her Trinidadian roots – she was born in Saint James, Port of Spain – and how much her upbringing in Queens, New York shaped her. It’s just frustrating to see that dismissed.

The criticism grew stronger when people pointed out inconsistencies between her earlier statements and recent actions. This included her approving of a post from Katie Miller, the wife of White House advisor Stephen Miller, who was promoting the SAVE Act – a law designed to stop undocumented immigrants from voting and participating in the political process.

One comment perfectly captured the prevailing feeling: ‘So now she’s supporting ICE and the separation of children from their parents.’

In 2024, Minaj claimed during a TikTok Live that she is not a U.S. citizen.

She explained that she was originally from the beautiful islands of Trinidad and Tobago, but has lived in the United States for a long time. She jokingly pointed out that despite paying a significant amount in taxes – ‘millions of dollars,’ she said – she hadn’t received ‘honorary citizenship’ even after ‘many, many, many years.’

The comment sparked criticism, with some accusing Minaj of being an immigrant solely focused on financial gain and lacking genuine concern for the culture that contributed to her success.

On top of the criticism she received for her views on immigration, Nicki Minaj has also been in the news recently due to a growing conflict with journalist Don Lemon.

Earlier this week, Nicki Minaj expressed strong disapproval on X (formerly Twitter) after Don Lemon broadcast a live protest he attended. The protest took place at Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, where demonstrators interrupted a Sunday service to criticize the church’s leaders for their reported connections to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In an all-caps post, Minaj wrote: ‘DON ‘C**K SUCKIN’ LEMON IS DISGUSTING.’

She angrily demanded, “How dare you! I want that criminal in jail! He would never treat another religion this way. Lock him up!”

After reporting on protests related to the death of Renee Nicole Good – a Minneapolis mother shot by ICE agent Jonathan Ross – Lemon stated he wasn’t surprised that Nicki Minaj doesn’t grasp the principles of journalism.

While appearing later on the I’ve Had It podcast, Lemon called Minaj ‘ignorant.’

He believes she frequently offers opinions on subjects she isn’t familiar with and thinks she should remain silent. He stated firmly that Nicki Minaj should stop speaking on the matter.

Nicki Minaj didn’t always publicly identify with the Republican party, but she’s recently become a well-known supporter of the MAGA movement.

Last November, Nicki Minaj publicly thanked President Trump for what she called his ‘leadership.’ She made these remarks while speaking at the United Nations about reported mistreatment of Christians in Nigeria, and highlighted his administration’s attention to religious freedom.
