Charli XCX responded to criticism surrounding a recent interview with Jason Bateman, who faced backlash for questioning her decision not to have children. She addressed the situation while wearing a fur coat.
The 33-year-old British singer arrived back at Heathrow Airport on Wednesday after a trip to the United States.
I always admire her style, and she really nailed it today! She was perfectly cozy for the London chill in a gorgeous tan and black fur coat, which she cleverly layered over a comfy khaki green hoodie. It was such a chic and practical look!
Charli completed her outfit with comfortable UGG boot mules and black sweatpants, and she shielded her eyes with visor sunglasses.
During her time in the US, Charli went to the Grammy Awards and was a guest on the Smartless podcast, hosted by Arrested Development actor Jason.
But the chat sparked backlash after Jason grilled Charli over her decision not to have children.
Jason, married to Amanda Anka and father to Francesca, 19, and Maple, 13, recently appeared on the popular SmartLess podcast with hosts Sean Hayes and Will Arnett.
During a conversation, the topic of having children came up. Charli, who married George Daniel of The 1975 last year, shared that she doesn’t want to have kids.
Jason created an uncomfortable situation when he explained that he’d convinced his wife she wanted children, despite her initial feelings. He then suggested to Charli that she might ‘find somebody,’ unaware that she was already married.
People strongly criticized Jason for bringing up the sensitive topic of having children with his guest and for not preparing adequately for the interview. One Reddit user expressed frustration with society’s tendency to pressure women about their plans for having kids.
During an interview, Charli was asked whether she’d prefer her child to have a similar upbringing to her own, or to be an only child and receive undivided attention. She responded by stating that she doesn’t want to have children.
Jason was surprised when she said she didn’t want a child. He asked her why, and she explained that while she enjoyed imagining the fun parts of having a baby – like choosing a name – she ultimately felt it wasn’t right for her.
‘The fact that that feels like the coolest part about and like, maybe I’m not ready you know?’
Jason began to share his own experience, saying that his wife hadn’t wanted to have children. He stumbled a bit while explaining, acknowledging he was awkwardly trying to praise her for that decision.
She says that early in our relationship, after meeting me, she immediately felt like I’d be a good father. Basically, you can find someone you really connect with.
After Charli uncomfortably revealed she was married, he playfully responded, ‘I really need to catch up on the news!’
You know, I was just playfully pushing back a bit, honestly! I could totally see where the conversation was headed – I anticipated the question about wanting kids with whoever I end up with next. It was actually kind of funny to me, and I was almost looking forward to hearing it! Jason definitely called me out on it, hinting at future family plans, which, hey, maybe he’s right!
Despite the lighthearted nature of the chat, the podcast was met with fury.
Someone on X shared a difficult moment from a podcast, noting that Jason Bateman unexpectedly asked a guest how many children she wanted, which they found inappropriate.
She told him she didn’t want children, and he responded by suggesting she hadn’t met the right person yet. She pointed out that she was already married, and then they didn’t speak for a moment.
People on Reddit reacted strongly to the conversation, with many commenting about the ongoing pressure society puts on women to have children.
It’s important to respect someone’s decision not to have children if that’s what they truly want. And honestly, Jason Bateman behaving inappropriately towards women? It’s sadly not surprising.
I’m really not interested in hearing people rave about how amazing having kids is, particularly when it’s men telling me.
It would be great if society accepted that some people genuinely don’t want to have children. It’s not always about finding the right partner; many people lead fulfilling and happy lives without having kids.
It was already unreasonable to pressure children about having kids even twenty years ago, but doing it now is completely unacceptable. It’s shocking how surprised people seem when someone says they don’t want children – it’s the 21st century, and people have the right to choose their own path.
I really admire Charli because she’s made it okay to live life on your own terms. She shows that you can still enjoy things like going to clubs even after turning thirty, and you don’t have to feel pressured to have kids if that’s not what you want. She inspires me and makes me feel more youthful! Please respect her and leave her alone.
