Zara, played by Sophie Turner, is having a rough day – she’s hungover and stuck showing a new intern the ropes at her unfulfilling job at Lochmill Capital, a London-based investment firm. Things quickly turn disastrous when armed robbers, wearing creepy masks, target Lochmill. Zara is caught in the middle of the heist and forced to transfer a massive £4 billion of people’s pension funds to the robbers’ accounts at gunpoint.
The first episode of the Prime Video series Steal, created by S.A. Nikias, immediately throws you into the action. However, there’s a surprise: Zara wasn’t caught off guard – she was deliberately brought into the situation by her colleague, Luke (Archie Madekwe), and quickly finds herself caught up in a much larger scandal than she expected. She was led to believe it would be a simple hack, not a major heist that would make national news. Over the course of the remaining five episodes, Zara faces serious danger as she tries to prove her innocence, survive, and discover the true person behind the crime.
Let’s break down the twists and turns of Steal’s ending.
Zara’s discovery
Zara always believed someone else at Lochmill was involved in the robbery, besides herself and Luke. The second-to-last episode reveals it was Milo (Harry Michell) who started it all, bringing Luke into the plan, who then recruited Zara. Milo targeted Zara because he saw her as deeply unhappy and stuck in a rut, often drinking to cope. He believed she wouldn’t be missed and that her death could easily be disguised as a suicide, making her the ideal scapegoat if the heist went wrong. This revelation devastates Zara, but she soon understands Milo wasn’t the true leader – he was only communicating with someone online. Milo received £20 million for his part, while Zara and Luke were each promised £5 million.
The final episode of Steal sees Zara discover Morgan (Andrew Howard), one of the robbers, inside her home, where he’s holding Luke captive. To protect both of their lives, Zara promises Morgan another £20 million if he’ll leave. She says she can get the money from Milo. They head to Milo’s place, and he hands over the secure wallet containing the funds, but they still need the access codes, which he’s hidden at the Lochmill offices. Milo attempts to intervene, trying to use pepper spray on Morgan, but Morgan fatally stabs him.
At Lochmill, Morgan receives the resources he needs, but it’s still not enough – he also wants Luke and Zara eliminated. Luke intervenes, protecting them both. DCI Rhys, who has developed feelings for Zara, arrives on the scene and is shot while trying to help her. The situation escalates when Morgan’s fellow robbers appear, intent on reaching him. A gun battle erupts, and Morgan manages to kill everyone who comes after him.
Zara had a chance to get away, but Morgan held her digital wallet containing £5 million. She surprised him with a taser, but also demanded to know the reason for the robbery. Morgan rudely told her to ask her police contact, calling her an “office girl.” Enraged, Zara jammed the taser into Morgan’s neck, delivering a fatal shock. When the police arrived, Zara, along with Rhys and Luke, managed to survive.
The news later reported that Milo was being made to take the blame, and his death was staged to look like a suicide – the same plan they originally had for Zara. While Luke is relieved it’s finally over, Zara remains committed to finding out the truth behind everything. In exchange for their freedom, both Zara and Luke turn over their encrypted digital wallets to MI5.

The real mastermind behind the heist
Zara attempts to resolve lingering questions, confronting Rhys about his potential involvement, but she can’t shake Morgan’s warning. Rhys strongly denies any connection, explaining he’s struggling with mounting gambling debts and recently lost his job. He argues it would be impossible for him to have planned a multi-billion-pound heist while being financially ruined. However, after Zara leaves, Rhys hurries home and reviews his case files, looking shocked as a realization dawns on him.
Zara went back to Lochmill one last time to collect her belongings and was surprised to see the police present. An intern informed her that the missing money had been recovered. Just as she was leaving, Rhys arrived, claiming he knew who was behind everything.
The person responsible for planning and carrying out the robbery is financial investigator Darren Yoshida (Andrew Koji). Rhys noticed a pattern: Darren consistently had access to inside information, which the criminals then used. Rhys also discovered Darren unusually requested to be assigned to this specific heist – he’d never turned down a case before. Rhys thinks Darren saw it as a chance to prove his abilities, calling it a “fireworks show” for his own amusement. Darren claimed he intended the heist to be victimless, but people were killed and many others were deeply traumatized.
Darren wasn’t just planning a robbery; he aimed to reveal the widespread corruption within the financial world. The operation was specifically designed to uncover how tax havens allow the wealthy to avoid contributing fairly, creating a system rigged against most people. “The current system doesn’t work for the vast majority of us,” Darren explains, “yet everyone is forced to participate, except those at the very top who actively avoid it. Tax havens are the key to how they do that.”
Although he paid back all the pension funds, Darren still has £10 million hidden in offshore accounts. He desperately wants Rhys to accept the money – to solve his own debts and do good in the world – but only if Rhys keeps quiet. Zara advises Rhys to reject the money and report Darren to the authorities, which, with reluctance, he does.
Darren was heartbroken, but Zara had one final surprise. Hidden amongst her work materials was the digital wallet Darren used to pay Milo for the robbery – it contained a massive £20 million. Although she’d given away her own wallet with £5 million in it, Zara had secretly kept Milo’s, knowing no one else knew it existed. It was a gamble, but it worked perfectly. She then reminded Rhys of advice he’d once given her: “If you focus on losing, you’ll play poorly and ultimately fail. This money is ours, Rhys.” With a newfound sense of optimism, the two of them left Lochmill Capital. Zara’s final question to Rhys was, “What does the future hold for us?”
“I’m not sure,” Zara says, “but something amazing.” For the first time, Zara feels truly peaceful. And with £20 million, they’re sure to have a very exciting future.
