A popular character from the older ‘Star Wars’ stories, previously known as the Expanded Universe and now called Legends, will officially become part of the main ‘Star Wars’ storyline in a new Luke Skywalker project coming out in 2026. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm, the previous stories were rebranded as Legends, but characters from those tales have gradually been reintroduced into the official ‘Star Wars’ canon.
A new Star Wars graphic novel, Tales from the Outer Rim: The Legend of Beggar’s Canyon, is scheduled for release in 2026. The story will include well-known characters from the official Star Wars timeline, like Luke Skywalker and Biggs Darklighter, and will also bring back Janek Sunber—also known as Tank—a fan favorite from the older “Legends” stories.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really excited about Tales of the Outer Rim: The Legend of Beggar’s Canyon! It’s going to show us what Luke was like before A New Hope – you know, when he was just a kid talking about Beggar’s Canyon, shooting womp rats, and zipping around in his T-16 speeder. The official word is it’s going to be “an unforgettable summer adventure” for Luke, Biggs, and Tank, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!
Luke Skywalker is a typical kid who dreams of excitement, but life on the faraway desert planet Tatooine feels incredibly boring. His friend, Biggs, is already planning to leave for flight school, which makes Luke feel even more trapped. Determined to have a memorable summer, Luke decides to take a risk and explore the famous Beggar’s Canyon!
The preview hinted at encounters with frightening ghosts in Beggar’s Canyon and dangerous wild animals.
People on Tatooine tell frightening stories about Beggar’s Canyon – some say it’s filled with ghosts, while others claim it’s inhabited by dangerous creatures. Luke, Biggs, and their friends are brave enough to explore this mysterious place, but will they uncover the truth behind the legends, or become lost in the unforgiving desert?

On the cover of the graphic novel, Tank is positioned on the far right with the group. The scene also features two Womp Rats, three T-16 Skyhoppers, and the desolate landscape of Beggar’s Canyon.

Comic book artist Brent Schoonover confirmed on X that a character named Tank will appear in the upcoming graphic novel. He shared the cover art and a character illustration showing Luke, Biggs, and Tank, labeling each character by name.
Tank Sunber was a childhood friend of Luke Skywalker in the older, expanded Star Wars universe, known as Legends. Interestingly, his name briefly appears in the original A New Hope during a conversation between Luke and Uncle Owen about the Imperial Academy. However, that’s the only time he’s ever been referenced in official Star Wars stories.

In the Legends continuity, Tank remained Luke’s friend from childhood and still enrolled in the Imperial Academy. He initially hoped to be a pilot, but his test scores weren’t high enough, so he joined the Imperial Army instead.
Okay, so get this – Tank was seriously ticked off when he found out Luke and Biggs had joined the Rebellion. Then, he talked to Darth Vader about Luke, and Vader basically ordered him to capture Luke. To try and lure Luke in, Tank pretended he was switching sides and sent a message saying he wanted out of the Empire. But the whole thing was a trap! Luke actually rescued him, brought him aboard a Rebel ship, and then, can you believe it, Tank turned on Luke! Total betrayal.
Tank and Luke fought, and Tank was winning, but he couldn’t deliver the final blow. Meanwhile, Vader’s ships started attacking the Rebel forces, and the ship they were fighting on sustained damage.
The attack created a hole in the ship and knocked Leia unconscious. Just as she was about to fall into the hole, Tank bravely grabbed her arm, saving her life. He then lifted her up to Luke, who was safely outside the hole, but tragically lost his footing and fell to his death.
Whether Tank’s story in official Star Wars will mirror his past from the older ‘Legends’ stories is unknown. However, fans probably won’t see the version of Tank featured in the ‘Legends of Beggar’s Canyon’ graphic novel. While he might mention joining the Imperial Academy, his time serving the Empire will likely be explored in a future official project, if Star Wars decides to revisit his character.
Other Star Wars Legends Characters Who Were Canonized
Thrawn

Grand Admiral Thrawn is easily the most beloved character from the old ‘Legends’ stories to now be part of official Star Wars. He first appeared in the 1990s in a novel called Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn.
Grand Admiral Thrawn officially joined the official Star Wars story in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. Since then, he’s become a key figure in several official novels, the Tales of the Empire series, and the live-action Disney+ show Ahsoka.
Grand Admiral Thrawn is a fan-favorite Star Wars villain, and he’s coming back in Season 2 of the show Ahsoka.
Darth Bane

Over the years, many Star Wars fans have become big fans of Sith characters from the older ‘Legends’ stories, and Darth Bane is consistently one of the most popular. A series of novels published in the 2000s really developed his character, and his fanbase has continued to grow since then.
Darth Bane became officially part of Star Wars history in Season 6 of The Clone Wars, during the storyline where Yoda seeks to become a Force Ghost. As part of his journey, Yoda experiences visions, and one of these visions features Darth Bane, with Mark Hamill providing the character’s voice.
Darth Bane was originally intended to appear in the Mortis storyline of The Clone Wars, but the scene was ultimately cut. However, a deleted scene still shows his planned involvement, and he’s been referenced in several official novels over time. There were past reports that Disney considered making multiple shows or movies centered around Bane, but those plans seem to have been abandoned.
Darth Revan

Darth Bane is a well-known Sith character from the Star Wars Legends stories. Many fans consider him second only to Darth Revan in popularity. Revan’s story is famous, especially through the Knights of the Old Republic video game that came out in the 2000s.
Similar to Bane, Revan was originally planned to appear in the Mortis arc with the Son, but that scene didn’t make the final cut. He officially became part of the official Star Wars story with the 2019 film The Rise of Skywalker. A guidebook released alongside the movie revealed that one of the Sith Eternal’s military groups was called the Revan Legion.
A lot of fans are hoping to see Revan return in future Star Wars stories, and would love to see a movie or TV show dedicated to exploring his background and journey. While Revan has appeared in some animated specials like LEGO Star Wars: Pieces of the Past, those weren’t considered official parts of the Star Wars story.
Dash Rendar

As a huge Star Wars fan, I remember when Dash Rendar first showed up in the old Shadows of the Empire novel. He was basically designed to be a bit like a cooler, more mysterious Han Solo, and honestly, a lot of us found it pretty funny – in a good way! It was a neat addition to the expanded universe at the time.
Although Dash hasn’t appeared in any official Star Wars movies or TV shows, he was mentioned in the 2018 book Solo: A Star Wars Story: Tales from Vandor. The author, Jason Fry, explained that he included Dash because the character reminded him of Han Solo, and it was mostly just a playful addition.
Jaxxon

Jaxxon T. Tumperakki is a long-standing character in the Star Wars universe. He first appeared in Star Wars comic books back in 1977, the very same year the original movie was released.
Jaxxon is a popular character known for being a smuggler who aided the Rebel Alliance, often working with heroes like Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. While he’s been a part of the official Star Wars story in comics and other media for a while, he hasn’t appeared in any of the live-action TV shows or movies – though that might change soon. He did appear in some non-canon LEGO Star Wars shows.
