Danny Hewitt, a groom on Married At First Sight, has spoken about the incident that caused problems during his wedding to Bec Zacharia.
The 34-year-old Englishman told the Daily Mail that his vow to ‘bail Bec out of jail’ was just a joke and wasn’t meant to be taken literally. He said it felt strange watching the show and seeing how upset Bec was by the comment at the time.
Watching the footage was a bit surreal, it really brought back a lot of memories,” Danny explained. He especially remembered watching Bec walk down the aisle as a particularly special moment.
She looked stunning in her dress, and I was completely captivated by the sight. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, one I hoped I wouldn’t repeat.
Bec became uneasy during Danny’s wedding vows, and was later seen crying after she understood his mention of jail as a warning sign about their future.
Danny claimed the line was simply a joke that failed to land.
‘I obviously meant it as a joke,’ he said.
‘The seriousness in it was more like Bonnie and Clyde have each other’s backs.’
He clarified that he wasn’t upset with Bec for reacting emotionally, explaining that wedding days are incredibly stressful and can make people misinterpret situations.
It’s a really tough day, and you’re likely tired. Everyone’s feelings are running strong, and with so much stress, it’s easy to misunderstand things, he explained.
Danny explained that his jokes come from his background and aren’t meant to be childish, framing it as a matter of cultural perspective.
As an Englishman, he believes people from his country have a naturally playful and mischievous sense of humor. He described a thriving comedy scene filled with sarcasm, emphasizing a preference for finding humor even in difficult situations – choosing to laugh rather than dwell on negativity.
The groom reassured Bec about his friends, including one of his groomsmen who was a performer with the Magic Men group. He understood her concerns about his close-knit group of friends.
Danny admitted he understood why Bec was rattled when she saw his entourage at the altar.
Women immediately assume I’m either a dancer or just out for a good time. But it’s my responsibility to prove to Bec that those assumptions are wrong, and show her who I really am.
I understand why she reacted that way. If I were in her shoes and saw her with a group that gave off a bad impression, I might feel the same.
Danny shared that he wasn’t actively trying to get on the show; instead, the producers contacted him first. He initially agreed to a conversation, not expecting it to lead anywhere.
I honestly never imagined myself doing this. But it’s a unique opportunity, and finding love along the way would be a wonderful bonus, he explained.
He acknowledged that the instant fame after the show’s premiere has been difficult to adjust to, and he now feels strange when people recognize him in public.
Danny and Bec seemed very happy together right after their wedding, but problems started during their honeymoon when Danny confessed they didn’t have much sexual attraction.
Bec was deeply upset by the confession, later explaining that she felt evaluated based on her appearance and quickly relegated to the ‘friend zone’ after they were intimate.
Danny has insisted that the interpretation is wrong.
‘I didn’t say there’s no connection. What I said was our sexual chemistry is low,’ he said.
He insisted he was being brutally honest to help her, not to embarrass her, and believed that a lie would have only hurt more in the long run.
He argued that while lying to Bec might seem like a way to protect her feelings right now, it would ultimately cause her more pain in the future.
Danny explained that while their relationship was generally very good, he felt the only problem they had was a lack of chemistry, which he hoped they could resolve.
He felt the show’s editing highlighted mostly the awkward moments, even though their honeymoon included many good times.
‘We had some really good days and really good moments,’ he said.
So far, the only footage shown is of us discussing a perceived lack of connection, and it makes it seem like I put Bec in the friend zone – but that’s not actually what happened.
When asked about who he connected with at the bachelor party, Danny mentioned several guys, including Steven, Filip, Scott, and the groom, Chris Nield, who has been a bit of a controversial figure.
He went on to praise Chris for ‘stirring it up’ when the other grooms were playing it safe.
‘I liked it when Chris came in and stirred it,’ Danny admitted.
The boys were playing cautiously at first, but then Chris came in and played with a lot more energy and confidence. It was a welcome change.
Danny said that his relationship with Bec was very open and truthful, and that they both fully committed to trying to make the experiment work.
‘There were tough times, there were amazing times, but we gave it everything we had,’ he said.
‘I’m proud of us both for that,’ he said.
And when asked if he was worried about being portrayed as a villain, Danny was blunt.
‘No, not really, because I was just myself,’ he said.
‘If I’m a villain, I’d rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I’m not.’
Married At First Sight continues Thursday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine.
