Currently, the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie seems to draw more inspiration from other games in the Mario series than from the original Super Mario Galaxy game it’s named after. The film, a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, will be based on the 2007 Wii game Super Mario Galaxy, known for sending Mario on an adventure through space and introducing the character Rosalina.
The initial trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lived up to its name, properly introducing Rosalina and hinting at the characters’ adventures in space. However, the second trailer took a different approach, and doesn’t immediately suggest that Mario and Luigi are going to space to join forces with Rosalina and fight Bowser Jr. when watched on its own.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie May Be Adapting Super Mario Odyssey Too
I’ve been watching the new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it’s so cool to see how much it’s drawing from Super Mario Odyssey! I instantly recognized the desert area where Mario and Luigi find Yoshi’s egg as the Sand Kingdom from that game. And that T-Rex at the end? Definitely from Odyssey‘s Cascade Kingdom! It’s awesome to see them bringing elements from that game into the movie.
The latest trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie actually contains more references to Super Mario Odyssey and other Mario games than it does to the original Super Mario Galaxy. It surprisingly leaves out key elements from Super Mario Galaxy, like the Lumas, other planets, and the overall cosmic themes that were central to the 2007 game.
The preview shows a classic Mario game experience, with familiar enemies like Cheep Cheeps and Lakitu, and environments that feel like Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 2. This mix of Mario games in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hints at a story where Mario travels to different worlds, similar to how Super Mario Odyssey took him to 14 unique kingdoms.
Like Super Mario Odyssey, the next Mario game could feature over a dozen different worlds. These worlds might draw inspiration from classic Mario games, as well as the space-themed settings of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Early looks at The Super Mario Bros. Movie suggest it might blend elements from both Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario Galaxy, instead of simply retelling the Galaxy story. This could be a good thing, as Odyssey successfully built 14 detailed and imaginative worlds using a mix of fresh ideas and familiar concepts.
