Rocket League has become incredibly popular recently, bringing in a lot of new players. This surge in popularity has also sparked some online arguments, most notably a public discussion between streamers xQc and Jynxzi, who is new to the game.
Now that he’s realized how challenging Rocket League is for professional players, he believes it has a bigger difference in skill between good and great players than any other multiplayer game. But xQc, known for being competitive, strongly disagrees, arguing that Overwatch requires even more skill at the highest levels.
xQc and Jynxzi go back and forth over Rocket League’s true skill gap
Rocket League has recently become incredibly popular again, with a big increase in players and viewers on Twitch and other streaming sites. This sudden jump in interest is largely thanks to Jynxzi, who has started playing and learning how to play the game’s unique brand of car-based soccer.
Jynxzi quickly discovered that Rocket League has incredibly difficult mechanics, some of the toughest to master in gaming. Even while learning from pros like SquishyMuffinz, he struggled to understand the game’s more advanced techniques.
While learning and playing Rocket League on stream, Jynxzi came to believe it has a steeper learning curve and demands more skill than any other game. This conclusion followed a live match where he and other content creators were convincingly defeated by a former professional player, Retals. Jynxzi stated, “Rocket League is easily the most skill-based game I’ve ever played. I can’t think of a single game that requires more expertise.”
Almost immediately after Jynxzi said this, xQc publicly disagreed. He argued that Overwatch, the game he used to play professionally, actually requires more skill than any other video game.
xQc, while streaming, explained that Overwatch demands quick thinking and constant adaptation. He emphasized the game requires a lot of strategy, clear communication, and has the most challenging aiming mechanics of any game he’s played.
So, xQc’s take on skill gaps really got people talking, especially us Rocket League fans! I saw this awesome reply from Stumpy, a popular Rocket League caster, and it was spot on. He basically said if you think Overwatch is harder than Rocket League, you don’t know what you’re talking about. He pointed out that a professional Overwatch player would lose against seven amateurs, but a retired Rocket League pro actually beat seven amateurs! He thinks it’s not even a debate – Rocket League’s skill ceiling is way higher.
It’s hard to claim Overwatch has the steepest learning curve when there are so many competitive first-person shooters like CS2, VALORANT, and Call of Duty. But Rocket League is in a league of its own. Its complex mechanics consistently challenge new players, and there are advanced techniques that truly separate the pros from the amateurs – something you don’t see as distinctly in many other games, including Overwatch.
While skills from games like Overwatch and other first-person shooters don’t fully apply to Rocket League, a player named Stumpy argued with xQc on Twitter that Rocket League is actually more difficult. Stumpy explained that Rocket League has unique, challenging mechanics that even experienced players with thousands of hours of playtime struggle to master consistently, something you don’t find in Overwatch. This came after xQc claimed FPS games are harder because players have spent so much time honing their skills in that genre.
This debate won’t have a clear winner, but both sides make valid points.
