Pedro Pascal will lead the cast of the new romantic drama, De Noche, directed by Todd Haynes. Shooting for the film is scheduled to start next month, and he’ll be acting alongside Danny Ramirez.
Set in 1930s Los Angeles, De Noche tells the story of a surprising romance between a tough detective and a younger schoolteacher (Ramirez). As the city grapples with corruption and the threat of war looms, the two men find themselves targeted by a powerful and corrupt political force, forcing them to escape to Mexico.
Pascal stepped in after Joaquin Phoenix departed the project in 2024, just five days before filming was set to start. Phoenix hasn’t publicly explained why he left.

Director Todd Haynes, known for his thoughtful explorations of complicated and personal relationships, recently directed May December and Carol. He earned an Oscar nomination for his screenplay of May December and previously collaborated with Jon Raymond to co-write De Noche.
Hayes described his new movie as a story about Pedro Pascal and Danny Ramirez navigating a time of internal corruption, racial injustice, and worldwide fear – issues that sadly still resonate today.

Honestly, playing this, I was really struck by how powerfully it showed that love and wanting something badly can help you get through anything. Even when things seem totally broken and impossible, those feelings can pull you through. It’s a really moving idea, and the game really nailed it.
There’s talk the movie might receive an NC-17 rating in the US – similar to an 18 certificate in the UK – because it contains very explicit sexual content.

Pedro Pascal is a versatile actor popular with both mainstream and independent film audiences. He’s appeared in big-budget movies like The Fantastic Four: First Steps, as well as smaller, critically acclaimed films such as Ari Aster’s Eddington and Celine Song’s Materialists. De Noche is his first project working with director Haynes.
Marvel fans will recognize Ramirez from his roles as Joaquin Torres, also known as Falcon, in both Captain America: Brave New World and the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday. He was also featured in the hit movie Top Gun: Maverick.
I was so excited to see Pascal and Ramirez working together again – they were both fantastic in The Last of Us! It’s a shame to hear Ramirez won’t be continuing with the show, but I’m really curious to see what Jorge Lendeborg Jr. brings to the role of Manny. It’ll be interesting to see him take over!
