‘The Society’ Is an Underrated Netflix Thriller You Can Binge Quickly

Even though it first appeared on Netflix several years ago, The Society remains a fantastic series to watch all at once. Netflix has consistently delivered captivating shows, and there’s usually something to enjoy when you’re looking for a thrilling weekend watch. Whether it’s the unsettling atmosphere of Tall Pines Academy in Wayward, the quiet tension of The Beast in Me, or the chilling true crime stories of Mindhunter, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Netflix offers many suspenseful shows set in seemingly peaceful small towns, but The Society stands out. It’s a captivating story with well-developed characters, and because it only has one season, you can finish it in about 10 hours.

Netflix released The Society on May 10, 2019. The show starts with a fascinating situation: teenagers in West Ham, Connecticut, discover all the adults have vanished, and they’re left to fend for themselves. Like the classic story Lord of the Flies (which is also getting a new adaptation), it’s a compelling look at what happens when young people face challenges and explore themes of power, rivalry, loyalty, and bravery.

You’ll be hooked, constantly guessing what will happen to the teenagers after all the adults disappear. This is due to the show’s relatable and believable characters. The Society uses familiar teen storylines, like Becca Gelb’s (Gideon Adlon) pregnancy, and explores the complex bond between sisters Allie (Kathryn Preston) and Cassie Pressman (Rachel Keller). The characters are diverse – some are rule-breakers, while others always try to do what’s right.

What sets this show apart is its characters – they’re more complex and realistic than you usually find in teen dramas. The friendship between Becca and Sam is genuinely touching, and watching Sam support her through an unexpected pregnancy feels very real. While the show deals with serious issues like life and death, it’s not just about that. It’s about how everyday anxieties and fears feel incredibly relatable, even if we’re not facing the same extraordinary circumstances. Everyone can understand the struggle of dealing with big changes and finding your footing in a new, confusing situation.

As a big fan of thoughtful dramas, I was immediately drawn to The Society knowing it came from Christopher Keyser, the creator of Party of Five. Both shows really dig into complex emotions, feature compelling love stories, and keep you guessing. But where Party of Five felt like a classic family drama, The Society adds a thrilling, almost unsettling edge that makes it even more captivating, honestly.

As a viewer, I was really disappointed to hear Netflix canceled The Society after just one season. That final episode, “How It Happens,” left us with a huge cliffhanger! Usually, that would be incredibly frustrating, but The Society is different. While we’ll never get official answers, the show cleverly hints at where things were going, allowing us to still piece together a potential Season 2 storyline and appreciate everything we did get to see.
