Shaun Evans stars as John Hughes in the new ITV series, which begins Sunday, February 8th at 9pm. Hughes is an MI5 agent facing difficult decisions in his work and personal life.
When John learns about a potential attack on UK soil from a secret source, a dangerous situation unfolds. The operation to stop it fails, and John finds himself fighting not only powerful enemies, but also those within his own organization.

The new series is quite a departure – it’s much more intense,” she explained to Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley. “While Beyond Paradise can tackle difficult topics, it always maintains a hopeful and gentle approach.
Playing the role of a betrayer is a unique experience, and it’s enjoyable to try something different. It’s thrilling and exciting, and you can fully immerse yourself because you know it’s all happening in a secure and controlled setting.
The spy thriller also features a strong supporting cast, including Gamba Cole, Omid Djalili, Matthew Tennyson, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Paddy Rowan, Waj Ali, Karim Kadjar, Emma Cunniffe, and Georgina Rylance.
Actor Evans, known for his roles in shows like Endeavour and Vigil, has described the new spy thriller as a story about a man facing a midlife crisis. He explained that his character, John, is at a turning point and searching for a new direction in life.
He’s experiencing a personal crisis – his relationship is ending, and colleagues no longer admire his independent spirit. He’s also facing health issues. Placing this personal struggle alongside a backdrop of international spying creates a compelling and layered narrative.
Betrayal premieres on Sunday 8 February on ITV1 and ITVX.
