Who’s ready for a Minions happy dance?
Spanish figure skater Tomàs-Llorenç Guarino Sabaté announced on Tuesday that he might be able to perform his program featuring music from the movie Minions at the Olympics. Universal Pictures has given him permission to use the music for this “special occasion,” and he’s currently working through the final steps to make it happen.
Guarino Sabaté shared an update expressing excitement that his project is nearing completion, with just a few final details to finalize for the remaining two musical pieces. He also excitedly noted that seeing his ‘minions’ perform on Olympic ice is becoming a reality, and promised to keep his supporters informed of his progress.
2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics
Mexican skater Donovan Carrillo hopes to continue his recent achievements and contend for a medal at the upcoming Milan Cortina Olympic Games.
Spanish skating champion Guarino Sabaté learned on Friday – just a week before the Olympics begin – that he can’t use the “Minions” music he’s been skating to all season. Copyright issues mean he has to quickly create a new routine for his Olympic debut on February 10th. He had been planning to perform his short program dressed as a Minion, in blue overalls and a yellow shirt. It’s a really unfortunate and last-minute change.
The bright yellow Minions are well-known characters from the “Despicable Me” movies, created by Universal and Illumination. NBCUniversal also has the rights to broadcast the Olympics in the United States.
Guarino Sabaté shared that he was deeply disappointed to learn this news, especially with his biggest competition just around the corner. He explained that this season, he aimed to bring fun and energy to his performances with his ‘Minions’ program, while still meeting all the technical requirements. Despite the setback, he’s determined to face the challenge and make the most of the situation.
The athlete stated he had correctly followed all required steps, submitting his music for approval through the International Skating Union’s system back in August. This situation highlights how complicated music licensing can be, especially in artistic sports like figure skating. Since most popular music is copyrighted, skaters are responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions to use it in their programs.
For now, fans can only hope that Guarino Sabaté’s vision of Minions bringing fun and excitement to the Olympics will eventually become a reality.
