As a long-time fan, I was really surprised – but also excited – to hear that Blake’s 7 is getting a reboot! The original series, which ran from 1978 to 1981, was a classic – it followed Blake as he gathered a crew of rebels to fight against the oppressive Federation that ruled the galaxy. Now, Peter Hoar, who’s directed episodes of The Last of Us and Doctor Who, is leading the charge with his production company, Multitude Productions, and I’m hoping they’ll do the show justice!
Though created by Terry Nation – the creator of Doctor Who‘s iconic Daleks – Blake’s 7 never became as widely popular. Still, the show has maintained a dedicated fanbase that continues to celebrate it, even into 2026, despite some viewers being unhappy with how it ended.
Blake’s 7 Had One Of The Most (In)Famous Finales Of All Time
Today, series endings face a lot of criticism, especially with shows like the recent finale of Stranger Things. It makes you wonder how a classic show like Blake’s 7 would have been received if it ended in this age of social media.
By the end of Blake’s 7, Blake hadn’t been a central figure for nearly two seasons, as Avon had become the leader. The final episode, aired in 1981, wasn’t planned as a setup for another season, but it featured Avon and his team finding Blake, hoping he could revitalize the rebellion.
A miscommunication led Avon and the crew to think Blake had betrayed them and joined the Federation. In a fit of rage, Avon shot and killed his old friend. Simultaneously, the Federation launched a real attack on their base. The ensuing battle seemed to kill everyone – all the main characters. The series concluded with Avon encircled by enemies, smiling as he faced certain death alongside them.
Blake’s 7 is famous for having one of the most shocking and depressing endings in television history – and that was intentional. The show was always known for challenging expectations, so an ending where the villains succeed felt true to its rebellious nature. Producer Vere Lorrimer told the BBC they wanted to create “the biggest cliffhanger ever” and deliberately avoid the predictable “good triumphs over evil” storyline. They certainly succeeded in doing just that.
Even before the age of social media, the decision to kill off most of the main characters in Blake’s 7 caused a strong negative reaction from fans, and it’s still a hotly debated topic over four decades later. Some viewers admire the show’s boldness, while others feel the series deserved a more satisfying ending than just a shocking twist.
How The Blake’s 7 Reboot Can Resolve The “Biggest Cliffhanger That’s Ever Been”
The ending of Blake’s 7 seems completely final at first. However, Vere Lorrimer pointed out that only Blake’s death was certain. The fates of the other characters were left open to interpretation, and even Avon wasn’t shown dying onscreen. This raises many questions about what happened afterward: Were the heroes captured, or did they manage to escape? And how did Blake’s death affect Avon?
The upcoming revival of Blake’s 7 could resolve some long-standing questions, but that depends on what kind of reboot it is. If it’s a straightforward remake with new actors playing the same characters and telling the same story, the reboot could offer a new ending to the original series’ finale – provided it doesn’t get cancelled before then.
As a big sci-fi fan, I’ve been following the talk about a potential Blake’s 7 reboot, and it’s got me really excited. If the director, Peter Hoar, is thinking of doing something like Alien: Romulus – a fresh story within the same universe with new faces – then they could finally answer some of the questions left hanging by that infamous finale. I mean, what did happen to Avon? That’s a storyline ripe for exploration, and could even be the starting point for a whole new crew of rebels! It’s still early days, of course, but honestly, after 45 years, this feels like the perfect moment to resolve that massive cliffhanger and give Blake’s 7 the ending it deserves.
