It’s become common for comedy fans to look back at older movies and recognize jokes or storylines that haven’t aged well – things that now seem racist, sexist, or otherwise offensive. While some of these were intentionally edgy or satirical, others are just puzzling. A good example is the 1987 film Overboard, which is labeled a romantic comedy, but features troubling themes of kidnapping and sexual coercion. A 2018 remake attempted to address these issues and is now available on Netflix.
The movie features Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as a couple. Russell plays Dean, a carpenter hired to work on Hawn’s character Joanna’s yacht, but she’s constantly critical of his work. After Joanna falls off the yacht and loses her memory, Dean pretends to be her husband. The story follows Joanna, now calling herself Annie, as she adjusts to Dean’s messy, lower-class life and takes on the role of stepmother to his three energetic sons. Dean takes advantage of her amnesia and they begin a relationship, but when her actual family appears, her memory returns.
This new version flips the original story: Eugenio Derbez stars as Leo, a wealthy man who loses his memory and ends up living with Kate, a single mom played by Anna Faris. Even with this twist – and despite including a character who uses manipulative tactics – the movie is still categorized as a romantic comedy.
How Did ‘Overboard’ Perform?
You know, the original Overboard from the 80s wasn’t a huge hit in theaters, but it really found its audience on TV reruns throughout the 90s. The remake from 2018 did okay, not a blockbuster, but it made $91.2 million worldwide on a budget of just $12 million – which, honestly, is a pretty great return. It’s cool to see a movie like that actually turn a profit!
It’s no surprise that early reviews of the first movie didn’t notice its flaws, even though it wasn’t a big success. Critics particularly liked the connection between Russell and Hawn, and Roger Ebert gave it a good rating – 3 out of 4 stars. The recent remake, however, hasn’t been well-received, currently scoring only 24% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
Other Anna Faris Offerings

CBS
So, maybe you weren’t completely won over by Anna Faris in the Overboard remake, or perhaps you just finished watching it on Netflix and are craving more of her comedic timing. Either way, good news! Netflix is also streaming all eight seasons of the CBS sitcom Mom, giving you plenty more Faris to enjoy.

In the series, starring alongside Alison Janney, Anna Faris plays a mother working to overcome substance abuse. Her own mother, played by Janney, is also struggling with addiction. After years of not speaking, the two women reconnect, bonding over their shared experiences as mothers and in recovery.
Anna Faris and Allison Janney consistently received award nominations for their work on the show Mom. While Faris had appeared in many comedic films, Mom was her first leading role in a sitcom. All 170 episodes are now available on Netflix, so even if you haven’t seen the later seasons after Faris departed, there’s still a lot of humor to enjoy.
