NBC has a history of successful mockumentary sitcoms, including shows like Parks and Recreation and The Paper St. Denis Medical. Now, fans of the genre have something to celebrate: the network’s newest offering in this style has been renewed.
NBC has announced it will be back for a third season! The current season is still running and will wrap up on February 2nd.
The show St. Denis Medical centers around a struggling Oregon hospital where hardworking doctors and nurses do their best to provide care despite limited resources. NBC highlights that St. Denis Medical is the only primetime comedy on major networks to increase its viewership among adults aged 18-49 compared to last season. However, this data doesn’t include comedies on Fox that benefit from being broadcast before or during NFL games on Sundays.
NBC has picked up a third season of Reba McEntire’s comedy, Happy’s Place. According to Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content for NBC and Peacock, both St. Denis Medical and Happy’s Place have been very successful, providing great comedy and connecting with viewers thanks to their funny characters. They are important parts of NBC’s primetime and Peacock streaming lineups.
I just wanted to give a massive shout-out to everyone involved in making these shows – the producers, the actors, and all the crew. They’ve done an amazing job bringing these stories to life, and I’m so glad they’re going to keep making us laugh!
St. Denis Medical Star on Her ‘Optimistic’ Character
The new comedy series St. Denis Medical was created by Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin. It stars Wendi McLendon-Covey, Allison Tolman, Josh Lawson, Kahyun Kim, Mekki Leeper, Kaliko Kauhai, and David Alan Grier. Allison Tolman plays the role of supervising nurse Alex in the show.
Tolman described her character, Alex, as a representation of the healthcare system’s struggles. Alex believes she can single-handedly help everyone, constantly saying, ‘I can do it all.’ However, Tolman emphasized that’s simply not realistic. ‘She’s going to burn out,’ Tolman said, ‘because no one person has the resources to handle that much. She’s trying so hard because she genuinely cares and is a dedicated nurse, but it’s an impossible situation.’
Tolman explained the dynamic between Alex and Dr. Ron, played by David Alan Grier. Grier often points out that he sees a younger version of himself in Alex – someone who was once full of hope and believed he could fix anything. But, as time has passed, Dr. Ron has become worn down and simply feels exhausted.
The second season of St. Denis Medical concludes on NBC February 2nd. You can currently watch the first two seasons on Peacock. There’s no news yet about when Season 3 will premiere.
