Nicki Minaj explained her decision to publicly support Donald Trump, even though it’s caused a lot of criticism, during an interview on The Katie Miller Podcast.
In a recent interview, the 43-year-old rapper explained her change in political views wasn’t caused by figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom or global events. Instead, she said it stemmed from witnessing what she felt was constant and unfair criticism of Donald Trump during his campaign.
Nicki Minaj explained her leanings toward conservative politics, saying religious freedom is a key concern for her. However, she admitted that a major factor was witnessing what she felt was unfair treatment of President Trump.
She went on to explain that the criticism leveled at Trump felt deeply personal.
The mother said she recognized the bullying and dishonesty in the campaign because she’d experienced similar things for years. Seeing it happen to someone else in real time, and believing they didn’t deserve it, was the final straw. It led her to realize she could no longer continue supporting it.
Minaj also shared that she’d long felt a pull towards something more than just her music career.
During the last presidential election, she felt she had to share her thoughts because she believed her predictions were starting to happen, and she sensed she was beginning a new, important purpose in her life.
In a video clip, Miller, who used to work for the Trump administration and is married to a top advisor for Trump, Stephen Miller, asked Minaj why she had recently become more outspoken about political and social issues. He wanted to know what specifically inspired her to start speaking out.
Nicki started to explain, ‘It feels like everything has been leading to this…’ She confessed she’d always had a powerful feeling that she was meant to do something more, like she had a hidden purpose.
She hinted at a significant event from a few months prior, explaining that intense pressure from others can sometimes lead you to discover your true purpose.
These comments follow recent attention sparked by the 2026 Grammy Awards, where host Trevor Noah joked about Minaj in his opening speech.
Noah acknowledged that Nicki Minaj wasn’t at the event with a joke, pretending she was still at the White House having a serious conversation with Donald Trump.
He followed up by doing an impression of Donald Trump, playfully boasting, ‘You know what, Nicki, I have the biggest butt. Seriously, I do. Everyone’s talking about it, Nicki. They say it’s you, but it’s actually me. Wap, wap, wap! Take a look!’
Nicki Minaj responded on X the next day, posting a message about divine justice. She wrote that those who criticize her will face consequences, as God will expose their actions and ultimately prevail. She ended with a declaration of faith in Jesus Christ.
Recently, Minaj has strongly reaffirmed her position, even jokingly calling herself Donald Trump’s biggest supporter.
Last week in Washington, DC, she attended an event about Donald Trump’s accounts and was seen shaking his hand.
Honestly, I’m a huge supporter of the President – I’d even say I’m his biggest fan! And that’s something that will always be true for me. I said it myself at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, and I really mean it.
She added that criticism only strengthens her resolve – and that of Trump’s supporters.
We won’t allow them to continue bullying him or spreading false rumors. Their efforts won’t succeed. He has strong support, and we believe he’s divinely protected.
Trump responded off-mic, telling the rapper, ‘That is so nice, thank you.’
After leaving the stage, Nicki Minaj shook hands with Trump again, and they briefly held hands while standing with Kevin O’Leary as he spoke.
The strange incident rapidly went viral, sparking renewed discussion about her strong political views and what brought these two unlikely friends together.
She recently faced criticism again when an old social media post resurfaced, revealing she had shared that she entered the United States illegally as a child.
Many critics noted the irony of her suddenly supporting Trump’s policies, especially considering those policies involve separating families and deporting large numbers of people.
The controversy started after Nicki Minaj joined conservative commentator Erika Kirk at a Turning Point USA event in December.
Right away, fans started sharing a post from Nicki Minaj’s Instagram from 2018. In it, she talked about her own family’s immigration experience and criticized the practice of separating families at the border between the U.S. and Mexico.
People reacted by saying she seemed disconnected from her difficult history, and that she’s changed a lot since then.
Nicki Minaj recently shared a personal story, recalling her experience arriving in the US as a five-year-old immigrant. She expressed deep concern over the separation of children from their parents, saying she couldn’t imagine how frightening it would be to be in a new and unfamiliar country without your family. She pleaded for the practice to stop, asking people to consider the fear and panic these children must be feeling.
The post, showing children sleeping on mats inside a Homeland Security detention center, was shared as people expressed strong anger about the separation of migrant children from their families.
Some fans have criticized Nicki Minaj, who was born in Trinidad and Tobago and grew up in Queens, New York, claiming she’s abandoned her roots.
The criticism grew stronger when people pointed out inconsistencies between her previous statements and recent actions. For example, she reacted favorably to a video of Katie Miller, wife of White House advisor Stephen Miller, supporting the SAVE Act, a law designed to stop undocumented immigrants from voting and participating in the political process.
The comment perfectly captured the feeling of outrage: ‘So now she’s supporting ICE and the separation of children from their parents.’
In 2024, Minaj claimed during a TikTok Live that she is not a U.S. citizen.
She explained that she was originally from the beautiful islands of Trinidad and Tobago, but has lived in the United States for quite some time. She playfully noted that despite paying a lot in taxes – ‘millions of dollars,’ she said – she hadn’t received ‘honorary citizenship’ even after ‘many, many, many years.’
The comment sparked criticism, with many interpreting it as evidence that Nicki Minaj is perceived as prioritizing money over genuine connection to the culture that brought her success, as one user put it.
Lately, it’s been a tough time for Nicki Minaj. Beyond the criticism she’s received regarding her views on immigration, she’s also been very publicly clashing with journalist Don Lemon. It’s definitely been a headline-making situation, and I’m seeing a lot of discussion about how she’s handling it all.
In January, Nicki Minaj publicly criticized Lemon on X (formerly Twitter) after he broadcast a live protest that interrupted a church service in St. Paul, Minnesota. The protest, held at Cities Church, aimed to denounce the church’s leaders for their reported connections to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In an all-caps post, Minaj wrote: ‘DON ‘C**K SUCKIN’ LEMON IS DISGUSTING.’
She angrily demanded his arrest, exclaiming, “How dare you! I want that criminal in jail! He would never treat any other faith this way. Lock him up!”
Following coverage of protests regarding the death of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old Minneapolis mother shot by ICE agent Jonathan Ross, Lemon stated he wasn’t surprised that Nicki Minaj lacked understanding of journalistic principles.
While appearing later on the I’ve Had It podcast, Lemon called Minaj ‘ignorant.’
He believes she frequently offers opinions on subjects she isn’t knowledgeable about and strongly suggested Nicki Minaj should be quiet.
Nicki Minaj hasn’t always identified with the Republican party, but she’s recently become a well-known supporter of the MAGA movement.
Last November, Nicki Minaj publicly thanked President Trump for what she called his ‘leadership.’ She made these remarks while speaking at the United Nations about reported mistreatment of Christians in Nigeria, and highlighted his administration’s attention to religious freedom.
