James Gunn’s DC Universe is moving forward quickly, and it’s exciting to see so many projects in development and scheduled for release soon. For example, Supergirl will follow Superman this summer, and a Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, is already planned for summer 2027. This shows a real commitment to consistently releasing content – alongside projects like Creature Commandos and Peacemaker – to build a large and impressive DCU collection.
The upcoming Supergirl movie is generating a lot of discussion. As the first DC Universe project released that wasn’t directly overseen by James Gunn, initial reactions are varied. A major point of contention is that the film’s visual style doesn’t quite live up to the artistry of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book it’s based on. This is especially concerning since the movie will be many viewers’ first look at Jason Momoa as Lobo, and it could end up being a less-than-ideal introduction to his character within the new DCU.
Jason Momoa’s Lobo is Divine Providence
Jason Momoa has long wanted to play Lobo, even before he became known as Aquaman in films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. He truly seems like the perfect fit for the character, both in appearance and attitude—his natural grin and overall presence are ideal. Ironically, Aquaman was the unexpected role for him.
As a DC fan, I’ve been really impressed with the casting choices James Gunn has been making – everything seems to be building around Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern. Honestly, seeing Jason Momoa cast as Lobo feels like a dream come true! I think he has the potential to be the DCU’s version of Deadpool, bringing that same kind of energy. My only worry is that introducing him in the Supergirl movie might not give the character the debut he deserves.
Supergirl Lives in Superman’s Shadow
The success of Supergirl is really important for Lobo’s future in the DC Universe. The early reactions, particularly to Lobo’s dimly lit scenes, suggest the movie could either launch his character or hinder it. While it’s unclear how big Lobo’s role will be beyond Supergirl, a disappointing movie could lessen the impact of his introduction to the DCU.
The new Supergirl series doesn’t have the same bright, imaginative look as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. It seems to be focusing on the story from that previous series, but with a darker, more realistic, science fiction style, similar to Guardians of the Galaxy.
These early choices don’t necessarily mean the Supergirl movie will be poor, and things could still change before it hits theaters. The glimpses of Krypton – possibly even the bottled city of Kandor, as seen in the Man of Tomorrow story with Brainiac – look fantastic, especially considering only a small portion of the film has been shown in the trailer.
Even with Jason Momoa’s impressive portrayal, the glimpses of Lobo in the trailer aren’t very revealing. Because the shots are dark and quick, it’s hard to make out any specific details about his character design.
I think we’re getting a real look at how this scene was lit, actually. James Gunn shared a quick clip on Twitter/X that gives us another peek, and it seems to confirm what they were going for.
Lobo’s Tease is Likely All It is
It’s likely that Lobo will only have a short appearance in Supergirl. Jason Momoa has said his role is brief, and it seems Lobo might just be featured in one big action scene rather than as a significant character or ongoing ally.
A successful cameo by Lobo will leave viewers eager to see more of the character. However, if both Lobo and Supergirl fail to make a strong impression, it could negatively affect how audiences view Lobo and potentially hinder his future development within the DC Universe.
Lobo has the potential to be a standout character in Supergirl, thanks to Jason Momoa’s performance and the excitement built around his casting. He might even be the main reason some people decide to watch the movie. Plus, his portrayal seems more true to the comic book version of Lobo than the Supergirl movie is to the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic.
The recent Superman film kept its focus narrow, primarily showing events in Metropolis with only a brief glimpse of Smallville. Supergirl, however, took a very different approach, telling a much larger, cosmic story that contrasted with Superman’s more grounded experience, highlighting the differences between Kara and her cousin.
The upcoming film has the potential to be a great setting for a character like Lobo, and hopefully, both he and the movie deliver. While early choices regarding the film’s look and feel have been controversial, it remains to be seen how audiences will respond to Supergirl and how its story and characters will impact the broader DCU.
