Narcos: Mexico actor dies at age 55 from ‘unknown causes’ after playing a drug smuggler on the hit Netflix series

Gerardo Taracena, known for his role in the Netflix hit Narcos: Mexico, has passed away at the age of 55.

So far there is no cause of death which has been listed as ‘unknown.’

The Mexican Academy of Film Art and Sciences announced his death on Instagram Sunday, describing him as a key figure in Mexican cinema who brought a powerful, genuine, and deeply human quality to his performances.

I was so saddened to hear about Taracena. He was a really talented performer – an actor born in Mexico City back in 1970. But it wasn’t just acting! He was a professional dancer too, and worked in both television and film. A true all-rounder, and he’ll be deeply missed.

He starred in the movies Apocalypto, Man On Fire, The Violin and Sin Nombre.   

Taracena achieved his biggest break on television, appearing in the series Narcos: Mexico for three seasons.

The actor played drug smuggler Pablo Acosta for 11 episodes from 2018 to 2020.

Taracena was well recognized in his native Mexico.

He received nominations for three Ariel Awards, which are awarded to the best Mexican films. 

According to the New York Post, he’s currently working on four different projects: two are being finished up, and two are in the early stages of development.
