Bridgerton spoilers follow.
The popular series Bridgerton released the first episodes of its fourth season on Thursday, January 29th, focusing on the stories of Benedict and Sophie. However, beyond the love stories, the show offers much more to viewers.
The latest episodes of the Netflix series highlight growing friction between Queen Charlotte and Lady Agatha Danbury. Much of their disagreement stems from the unequal power dynamic created by their roles as mistress and servant.
What to Read Next
Okay, so things were getting pretty intense with Lady Danbury, and she basically said she was thinking of stepping down. That got a lot of us fans worried that Adjoa Andoh – the actress who plays her – might be leaving the show for good, or at least not being in as much as we’re used to.
Fortunately, that’s not what happened. Showrunner Jess Brownell told Deadline that Andoh was always intended to return to the series, and this recent storyline was simply a way to show a different side of the relationship between Charlotte and Agatha.

Brownell stated definitively that Adjoa will continue to be a key character in season five and has no plans to leave the show. They then moved on to discuss the show’s central themes.
The storyline was primarily focused on examining a friendship with an uneven power dynamic, a theme that fits well with this season’s exploration of the relationships between those who serve and those they work for.
Queen Charlotte and Lady Danbury have a genuine friendship, but their different levels of power created a fascinating dynamic. It was compelling to see Lady Danbury prioritize her own needs, and this allowed us to see a new side to their bond.

The fourth season of the show, adapted from Julia Quinn’s 2001 novel An Offer from a Gentleman, is being well-received by critics. Currently, 80% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given it a positive review, based on 40 reviews.
Digital Spy gave the first four episodes a three-star rating, highlighting its portrayal of class differences and strong acting. We said the first part of Sophie and Benedict’s romance was developing well and viewers could expect a good story.
