Cher roasted for ending Grammys in chaos after walking offstage mid-speech and naming wrong winner

Cher caused a chaotic and embarrassing finish to the Grammys when she mistakenly announced the late Luther Vandross as the winner of an award that actually belonged to Kendrick Lamar.

Lamar received the most nominations that night with a total of nine, and both he and SZA won Record of the Year for their song, Luther.

Despite winning an award, 79-year-old Cher accidentally made a big mistake while accepting it, causing viewers to burst out laughing.

She began announcing the Grammy winner, saying, ‘And the Grammy goes to…’ but then paused awkwardly, looking ahead. She quickly laughed it off, explaining, ‘Oh! I was supposed to see the winner on the teleprompter.’

When she finally accepted she needed to open the envelope, she happily declared the winner: ‘Luther Gandross!’

Lamar, age 38, playfully laughed when Cher mentioned Luther Vandross—who passed away 20 years ago—but understood who she meant and went on stage.

Cher eventually realized she’d announced the wrong artist and playfully exclaimed, ‘Oh, no, Kendrick Lamar!’ She laughed at her error while Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s music played.

Everything about her time on stage was a bit messy. She went up to present the Record of the Year award, but host Trevor Noah stopped her to unexpectedly give her a lifetime achievement award instead.

Cher gave a heartfelt, pre-written speech about pursuing your dreams, but the moment ended awkwardly when she finished by saying, ‘Thank you. I guess I’m supposed to walk off now. All right.’

She walked off stage to thunderous applause, but quickly returned to address the controversy surrounding her Record of the Year win.

Social media exploded with amusement as people reacted to a viral clip. Comments included jokes like ‘Cher seems really high,’ ‘Luther Vandross is making me lose it,’ and ‘Cher’s reaction to the news about Luther Vandross is hilarious.’ Many users playfully suggested Cher was just learning about Luther Vandross’s passing.
