The Marvels’ Canceled Plot Almost Had Former Batman in Key Role – Report

A recent report indicates that The Marvels originally included plans for a well-known hero from Marvel Comics – an actor famous for playing a classic costumed character. However, the role was ultimately removed during the movie’s production and didn’t make it into the finished film.

George Clooney could have had a role in The Marvels

According to a post on X by industry insider @MyTimeToShineHello, George Clooney was considered for a role in The Marvels. The original plan involved casting a famous actor – either Clive Owen or Clooney – as a significant Marvel character who would appear briefly before dying early in the film, but this idea was ultimately dropped.

In the end, Marvel decided against including the character, and they didn’t appear in the finished movie.

George Clooney was once considered for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he ultimately turned it down. Reports from Business Insider in 2015 and Sean Howe’s 2013 book, Marvel Comics: The Untold Story, indicate that Clooney rejected the part of Nick Fury after reading the Fury comic series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.

This comic, released between 2001 and 2002 as part of Marvel’s MAX line for mature readers, contained graphic violence. One particularly shocking scene showed Fury killing an opponent by strangling them with their own internal organs.

During a 2024 appearance on the Comic Book Herald podcast, Eric Ennis – one of the creators of The Boys – discussed the rumors surrounding George Clooney and a potential role. He admitted he’d heard the story and was curious if it was true, but also speculated someone might have advised Clooney to stay away from the project. Ennis also stated that Marvel Studios would never have allowed the character to act as he’d written it.

Samuel L. Jackson was ultimately cast as Nick Fury, and his performance took inspiration from the character’s depiction in the Ultimates comic series. Jackson’s Fury quickly became a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first appearing after the credits of the 2008 film Iron Man.
