When a Studio Closure Brings Good Things: The Case of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers

Look, I love games, but it really gets to me when I see a studio that kills it with a new release only to get shut down right after. It’s heartbreaking to think about all the talented developers who poured their hearts into something amazing, only to be laid off. It just doesn’t seem fair after they’ve clearly proven what they can do.

It’s unfortunately common to see successful teams broken up due to company changes and interference. However, the story of the game Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is a bright spot – a great example of creators overcoming industry difficulties and continuing their work despite the odds.

Regaining Control From the Ashes

To fully appreciate today’s announcement, it’s important to remember the story behind this challenging fantasy RPG. When it first came out in July 2025, it instantly became popular with gamers worldwide, earning over 30 million Euros in just the first eight months.

Despite strong sales, the project faced significant pressure from outside forces and political meddling. This interference grew so severe that the studio eventually gave in to censorship requests and dismissed the game’s creator, Xia Siyuan. This decision sparked outrage and ultimately led to the studio shutting down.

Despite earlier reports, it appears the original creative vision for the game will live on! Digital Bros, the company behind 505 Games, recently announced a new agreement. They’ve given the original creator of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers – a game they fully acquired in April 2026 – control of the story once again.

According to the official document, Digital Bros has partnered with Chengdu Recursive Dolphin Technology Co. Ltd., a brand-new Chinese studio founded by Xia Siyuan, who served as the original creative director and project leader on Wuchang: Fallen Feathers.

With this new deal, Siyuan and his team will lead the development of a direct sequel to the popular souls-like RPG. Digital Bros will publish the game worldwide and is investing 21.5 million Euros upfront to make the sequel a reality.

Digital Bros announced that the deal aligns with their plan to invest in valuable, established intellectual property with strong future growth prospects. This approach allows them to maximize profits and reduce risks in the current, competitive video game market, as stated in their press release.

Siyuan and his team are now leading the development of a new game directly following the popular souls-like RPG, and Digital Bros will be the publisher worldwide.

As a fan, I’m finding this whole situation incredibly satisfying to watch! It’s almost like it’s correcting the problems that held back the first game. The official announcements sound pretty standard, but the real story is amazing: Xia Siyuan, who was pushed out of his last studio for refusing to let others control his creative vision, is now back in charge with a brand new team. He’s getting to make the sequel exactly how he wants, and that’s a huge win for everyone!

It’s unusual to see a positive outcome in the game industry with so many studios closing and companies facing difficulties. I’m truly happy this particular story has a good ending, and I’m excited to share the news with you – let’s look forward to the future of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers together!
