Okay, so Gesaffelstein finally won a Grammy, which, honestly, was long overdue! But everyone was talking about something else entirely… it wasn’t just the award, it was everything surrounding it, you guys! I’ve been following him forever and let me tell you, the buzz was insane!
The 40-year-old musician won the award for Best Remixed Recording for Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra” and attended the Los Angeles show wearing his signature black mask.
The peculiar face covering was paired with robotic gloves and a classic tuxedo.
He’s used this look onstage before, but his outfit almost stole the attention from his big win, particularly on X.
‘Looks like a super villain,’ one X user wrote.
‘What in the squid games they got going on?’ another asked.
Someone joked about feeling disconnected even at the Grammys, comparing it to being stuck choosing a character in a video game.
Gesaffelstein has worn this mask at past performances, but some people who weren’t familiar with his music thought it might be a form of blackface.
However, fans assured the uncertain it was merely part of his vision.
One person questioned if a performer was using blackface, while another responded that it was simply part of the performer’s artistic image and not intended to be offensive.
The Daily Mail reached out to Gesaffelstein’s team for a response regarding questions about blackface.
According to Billboard, the mask was an integral visual component during his tour last year.
Instead of giving a speech when he won the award for Best Remixed Recording, he simply blew a kiss to the audience.
Gesaffelstein is also up for Album Of The Year for his work on Lady Gaga’s Mayhem album.
The nominations were revealed in November, and Kendrick Lamar, a rapper with 22 Grammy Awards, received the most nominations with nine in total.
Lady Gaga received seven nominations, putting her in second place. She shares this number with Taylor Swift’s frequent collaborator, Jack Antonoff, and well-known pop producer Cirkut.
Sabrina Carpenter, with six nominations for her upcoming 2025 album ‘Man’s Best Friend,’ is set to perform at the three-hour show alongside other major musical artists.
Gaga, Justin Bieber and K-pop sensation Rosé will also take the stage.
The Recording Academy added two new awards this year: Best Traditional Country Album and Best Album Cover.
After Beyoncé’s success with her country album, Cowboy Carter, the Grammy Awards will now have two separate country album categories: one for contemporary country music and another for traditional country music. This change officially splits the former ‘Best Country Album’ award into two distinct honors.
Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. explained in June that the organization’s main goal is to accurately represent the musicians it supports annually.
This means truly hearing from our members so our policies stay current with the music landscape and help us recognize all the talented creators out there.
To be considered for nominations in 2026, recordings had to be officially released for sale in the U.S. between August 31, 2024, and August 30, 2025.
Grammy winners were decided after voting concluded between December 12, 2025, and January 5, 2026.
In a statement, Harvey Mason Jr. said the Grammy Awards are a chance to celebrate the artists who make the music world so dynamic, and this year’s nominees showcase the amazing talent that’s shaping the future of music.
This year’s nominees represent the wide range of talent and styles in music today, from up-and-coming artists to established stars. I’m looking forward to celebrating their achievements in the weeks to come.
