These mentors push their students to become their best, offering valuable life lessons and even inspiring the audience. While many mentors are important, a few in anime have truly had a massive impact on the heroes’ journeys and ultimate fates.
What I find so fascinating about these mentor characters isn’t just the guidance they give – it’s that each one profoundly impacts the hero’s journey, and the story itself, through a significant personal sacrifice or a pivotal action. They don’t just tell the protagonist what to do, they change things, and the consequences ripple through everything!
All Might’s Decision to Make Deku His Successor Created MHA’s Greatest Hero
My Hero Academia is a hugely popular anime about the world of superheroes. The main character, Izuku Midoriya (known as Deku), was born without any special powers but dreamed of becoming a hero anyway. He eventually meets his idol, All Might – the top-ranked hero – and after seeing Deku’s bravery, All Might chooses to pass on his powerful ability, One For All, to him.
It was a difficult choice, knowing the risks it presented for Deku. But All Might believed Deku had the potential to become an incredible hero. While Deku faced a tough and often painful path, constantly challenged by powerful enemies, he ultimately achieved his dream. In fact, he became a source of inspiration for many, even some villains, perhaps even more so than All Might himself. However, Deku wouldn’t have progressed as far without All Might’s support and sacrifice – a sacrifice that weakened All Might’s own powers – and the story of My Hero Academia wouldn’t have been possible.
Koro-Sensei Restored the Self-Worth of Class 3-E
Although Assassination Classroom isn’t for everyone, the bond between Koro-sensei and his students in Class 3-E is genuinely heartwarming and inspiring. Class 3-E was deliberately separated from the rest of the school as a way to motivate other classes by creating an underdog dynamic – but this actually led to the students losing interest in learning and becoming disruptive. Everything changes when Koro-sensei starts teaching them.
Despite being assigned the seemingly impossible task of assassinating their superpowered teacher, Koro-sensei, by year’s end, Class 3-E develops a strong bond with him, particularly Nagisa Shiota. Koro-sensei helps them overcome their insecurities, personalizes his lessons to suit each student, and addresses their individual weaknesses. He’s the kind of teacher every anime fan wishes they had! Without him, Class 3-E would likely have remained isolated and wouldn’t have experienced the growth they achieve in Assassination Classroom.
Monkey D. Luffy Wouldn’t Have Set Sail Without “Red-Haired” Shanks
The world of One Piece is huge, but the story centers on Monkey D. Luffy, captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, who now possesses the incredibly rare Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. While his adventure officially began at age 17, its roots were planted when he was just 7 years old. If Shanks and his Red Hair Pirates hadn’t visited Foosha Village, Luffy wouldn’t have been inspired to become a pirate, let alone dream of being King of the Pirates. But Shanks’ impact goes much further than just that initial inspiration.
Shanks once took Luffy’s Devil Fruit – which everyone believed at the time gave people rubber powers – from a man named Who’s-Who. It isn’t clear why he took it, but eventually Luffy ate it anyway because he was so hungry. Later, a group of bandits kidnapped Luffy on a ship as payback for something Shanks had done. During the kidnapping, a massive sea creature attacked, and Shanks bravely stepped in to save Luffy, losing his arm in the fight. This act of courage deeply inspired Luffy and played a huge role in shaping who he would become.
This isn’t the end of the story. Before saying goodbye, Shanks gave Luffy a very special gift: the straw hat that once belonged to Gol D. Roger. From saving Luffy’s life to unknowingly setting him on a path to greatness, Luffy is indebted to Shanks. While Shanks didn’t formally train Luffy like Silvers Rayleigh, it was Shanks who truly sparked Luffy’s journey to become the King of Pirates.
Jiraiya was Key to Naruto’s Emotional Development
Jiraiya was hugely influential in shaping Naruto’s character. Without Jiraiya’s guidance, Naruto wouldn’t have developed into the person he became, nor would he have achieved his dream of becoming Hokage. His death, caused by his former student Nagato, was heartbreaking, but it ultimately taught Naruto a valuable lesson.
Jiraiya’s death was a turning point for Naruto, forcing him to confront the roots of hatred and finally understand loss. Though Naruto never knew his parents, Jiraiya had become a father figure during their adventures, making his death deeply painful. This grief and anger surprisingly helped Naruto understand Sasuke’s pain and see things from his rival’s point of view. Driven to honor Jiraiya’s memory and achieve his dream of peace, Naruto also fully mastered Sage Mode. This tragic event was crucial, allowing the series’ powerful themes to truly resonate with viewers.
Tanjiro Carries on Kyojuro Rengoku’s Will
The Mugen Train Arc in Demon Slayer is a fan favorite, largely thanks to the character Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira. Although Tanjiro was already kind-hearted, Rengoku had an even greater influence on his sense of right and wrong. Rengoku’s energetic and passionate personality is inspiring. Initially, Tanjiro blamed himself for being weak, but Rengoku helped him overcome that feeling and become much stronger.
In his final moments, Rengoku comforted and inspired Tanjiro with the words, “Set your heart ablaze.” This phrase deeply affected Tanjiro, and resonated with fans of Demon Slayer. Whenever Tanjiro uses Sun Breathing, he remembers Rengoku’s encouragement. Though their time together was brief – limited to a single story arc – Rengoku’s death profoundly changed Tanjiro, making him more determined and responsible as he carried on the legacy of the Flame Hashira.
