As a huge movie fan, I wasn’t surprised to hear John Lithgow signed on for the new HBO Harry Potter series – it’s just too big a role to pass up! The guy’s a legend, of course. I mean, I first really noticed him as the terrifying Trinity Killer on Dexter, but he’s been brilliant in everything from Shrek (who doesn’t love Lord Farquaad?) to the hilarious 3rd Rock from the Sun. More recently, I enjoyed his work in Conclave. He’s taking on the iconic role of Professor Albus Dumbledore, which is fantastic, even though the whole thing has been a little complicated by the issues surrounding J.K. Rowling.
For seven years, author J.K. Rowling has been a vocal advocate for women’s rights, which has led to accusations of being anti-transgender. This has sparked significant public debate, with several stars from the Harry Potter films – including Miriam Margoyles, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson – publicly sharing their views. However, not everyone has joined the criticism. Jim Broadbent previously described the situation as “really sad,” and John Lithgow recently told Variety at the Rotterdam Film Festival that he actively resisted pressure to decline his role as Dumbledore.
She’s built a really influential body of work that’s captured the public’s imagination, especially among young people. At its heart, it explores the classic themes of good versus evil and kindness versus cruelty. I honestly find her perspective surprising and hard to understand. I’ve never personally met her, and she isn’t involved in this particular project. However, the people who are involved are truly exceptional.
I’m disappointed by the backlash to my involvement, especially considering the Harry Potter books don’t show any awareness of transphobic issues. J.K. Rowling created a story about compassion and understanding, and Dumbledore is a wonderful character. It was a difficult situation, and I felt pressured to step down, which made me both uncomfortable and sad. Ultimately, I decided to stay involved.
Someone at the film festival immediately challenged his statements, saying they weren’t constructive. The actor responded by saying he welcomed differing viewpoints and understood he might face disagreement.

If you’re still unsure about HBO’s planned series adapting all seven Harry Potter books, a first look at John Lithgow as Dumbledore might change your mind. Photos from the set show him with the classic long beard and glasses, but also sporting a striking dark coat – a departure from the looks of previous Dumbledores played by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. This version of Dumbledore feels much more powerful and commanding than the more gentle portrayal seen in the films.

Fans have noticed that the photos show a desert setting, which doesn’t appear anywhere in the first Harry Potter book. It looks like HBO is already establishing its own unique style for the series.
